How Well Do You Know Reptiles?

5, That's right, Tetzoo Quizzer, although, as MDg2012 says, several reptiles have pineal eyes.
That was the reptile I was thinking of.
The southern blind legless skink (Typhlosaurus caecus) also has a pineal eye. It seems that some amphisbaenids have pineal eyes.

MDG2012 4/5, Tetzoo Quizzer 1, so MDG2012 has another go at 5 reptile questions

Here are 5 more questions.
  1. This lizard is the most likely species that Charles Darwin ate during his stay at the Galapagos Islands.
  2. This family of species' common name, translates to "ground-lion" in Greek.
  3. Other than the Nile Crocodile, this species was also commonly mummified by the ancient Egyptians.
  4. This critically endangered species is the national reptile of a Southeast Asian country with an estimated wild population of around 100 individuals
  5. Cleopatra likely died from this species’s venom

1 - Not sure, I've heard he was a big fan of eating Galapagos giant tortoises. I think he called marine iguanas hideous or something. So I'll guess Galapagos land iguana

2 - Chameleon

3 - No idea. Without googling anything I'll just guess Central African rock python

4 - Cambodia's official state reptile, Batagur affinis

5 - Egyptian cobra

  1. Correct, he ate Galapagos Land Iguana (Conolophus subcristatus) but did call them ugly
  2. Correct
  3. Incorrect, here's a hint, it's a crocodilian
  4. Correct
  5. Incorrect

Okay, let's see how these do. It's quite difficult to come up with something that isn't super obvious but still has a clear answer if you know it.

1 - this lizard violates the norms in what is often called "the queen of problems in evolutionary biology"

2 - the only member of this (polyphyletic, and primarily Asian/Australian) group to reach the new world

3 - A (relatively) new drug, increasingly in the news in the UK and I think globally, can trace itself back to work in the 90s on this reptile

4 - this species is key to the reproduction of a hidden flower

5 - this lizard is well studied for its mating system, involving three types of males

  1. There are multiple species that could do Parthogenesis including whiptails and several species of gecko (such as the mourning gecko)
  2. I don't know. Maybe the genus Apalone (softshell turtles)
  3. Gila Monster (Heloderma suspectum)?
  4. Drakensberg Crag Lizard (Pseudocordylus subvirids)
  5. Common Side-Blotched Lizard (Uta stansburiana)

Well done, 4/5 correct!

For number 1, I was specifically going for Desert grassland lizard Aspidoscelis uniparens because it's not just about being capable of parthenogenesis, it's that it's exclusively parthenogenetic. Although you of course worked out the clue.

For number 2, I'm looking for you to name the one species from this group (which I think is diphyletic, but they're generally thought of as one group) that reaches the new world.

2. Blind skinks (Dibamidae). The only New World form is the Mexican blind lizard (Anelytropsis papillosus)

2. Blind skinks (Dibamidae). The only New World form is the Mexican blind lizard (Anelytropsis papillosus)

So I was actually thinking of sea snakes and Yellow-bellied Sea Snake as the only species that reaches the New World but your answer completely matches what I was looking for so point to you. I did suspect that multiple taxa might fit my description :P

  1. This was the first species to orbit the Moon.
  2. This desert lizard uses its spiny scales to drink
  3. This species is the largest of its group which are known for making a sound when threatened
  4. There are 2 species in this genus, with both of them living on separate continents. One is critically endangered while the other is least concern
  5. The Hindu goddess Ganga is said to have a vahana (animal transportation) of this species

1. Horsfield's tortoise
2. Moloch or thorny devil
3.Eastern diamondback rattlesnake
4. Chinese and American alligators
5 Crocodile-like makara

Don't know #1-3.

#4 must be the frilled-neck lizard inspiration for the Dilophosaurus

#5 I think would be the spider-tailed viper
