TBH I always wondered why the animals in game were either categorized so specifically or so vaguely. If I were to set up a species roster, I wouldn’t use specific populations (Bengal Tiger, western chimp, timber wolf, etc) to allow for more uses of animals for the general player base. For example, building European sections is always awkward since you have to include timber wolves and grizzly bears…

I feel like when people complain about not having polar bears and red kangaroos in the base game, they kinda miss the whole point of the DLCs. I agree it’s ridiculous, but for 5 animal DLCs, in order to motivate people to get them you have to include those iconic withheld species. I don’t think that the dlcs would be marketable without them.

Given the chance, I’d go for ZT2 style dlcs any day over planet zoo style DLCs. That’s just my take.

Also, remember, the game isn’t 100% trying to cater to the needs of the zoo nerd fan base. The general public won’t care about a dlc with only species they’ve never heard of. They need big name species to advertise.

I really like it but the only thing If I could I would add the California condor on to the conservation pack.

If I were to make the base game roster, I’d include jaguar, polar bear, california sea lion, king penguin, koala, red kangaroo, fennec fox, baboon, giant anteater, otter, etc etc but I think that’s already been discussed enough.

Here are my choices for what I’d replace, as I feel like that’s more interesting

Bengal Tiger - I’m not that upset we got two tigers. It’s reasonable IMO. Sumatran would’ve been a much better choice tho, since they’re actually kept in major European and American zoos.

Himalayan Brown Bear and Formosan Black Bear - Replace with Sun Bear and polar bear. Also, while we’re at it, change the Grizzly Bear to generic brown bear in order to avoid them being able to just add in other subspecies. Do the same for every other subspecies in game besides the tigers.

Aldabra Giant Tortoise - Replace with Anaconda or Retic.

Bonobo - Replace with some sort of gibbon

Nyala - Replace with Lesser Kudu. Still no clue why we don’t have them yet

I’d forfeit exhibit species from the base game and make an exhibit DLC. This would free up TONS of room in the roster to add more animals

I agree with you, it is not wise to specify the subspecies except the Western Lowland Gorilla (since 99% of Gorillas in captivity belong to this subspecies:p) since the slots for species are limited. As you mentioned, it is awkward for players to build European theme with Grizzly Bear, what if the Frontier offers the European Brown Bear, then we may lose the opportunity to get one of Secretary Bird, Tree Kangaroo or Black Howler since the European Brown Bear takes one slot. Red Foxes and Wild Boars have way more subspecies than Brown Bears and Tigers, while the Frontier just offers general Red Fox and Wild Boar, they probably notice that they don't have enough slots if specify the subspecies:D. For tigers, I think Mainland Tiger alone is good enough to represent Tiger, which covers all the living Tiger populations except the Sumatran.
Bonobo - Replace with some sort of gibbon
Swinging animation is mandatory for Gibbon, but the Frontier just completed the animation during the time they working on the Conservation Pack, so that explains why we don't have Gibbons in the base game and Southeast Asia pack.
Replace with Sun Bear and polar bea
If Polar Bear is offered by the base game, then very few people will buy the Arctic Pack, for many people the Polar Bear is almost the only reason to buy the Arctic Pack, since the scenery theme is very niche, the rest 3 species are all not high demanded (especially the Arctic Wolf, one of the lowest popular species in the game), also with same price, it has one fewer species than other scenery packs.

but what if the musk ox and wolverine were in the arctic pack? and polar bear in base game? i think a lot of people would have bought the arctic pack and then with the polar bear in base game and musk ox and wolverine in the arctic pack, the wolverine's slot in the eurasia animal pack could have been replaced with a golden snub-nosed monkey.

Both of these two species are not as popular as Polar Bear though, even with the Polar Bear the Arctic pack often be ranked as one of the least preferable packs. If you want to build Arctic theme without buying Arctic pack, I recommend moving the Reindeer to the base game, then putting Musk Ox or Walrus in the Arctic pack instead.

i think walrus could have been saved for the aquatic pack and then put the musk ox in the arctic pack.

I mean, I think a certain degree of creative liberty is always needed, since there will never be a "complete" species list. It doesn't seem unreasonable to have a grizzly bear, and for European zoos players could just use the grizzly as a stand-in if they wish. I've similarly used animals as stand-ins for similar species that I'd wanted to include- such as using the Formosan black bear when I wanted a sloth bear (back before Eurasia Pack), or using peafowl as a stand-in for a generic bird exhibit.

For tigers, I think Mainland Tiger alone is good enough to represent Tiger, which covers all the living Tiger populations except the Sumatran.
Except that "mainland tiger" is a completely ridiculous taxonomic status that doesn't reflect the true diversity of tigers :D. I think having two tiger subspecies, both the Amur and one tropical one, is more than reasonable.

As for how I'd change the roster, I think we've gotten to the point that we have a very reasonable roster, and I don't think there's much I'd change, even if the order animals were added was slightly different from what I'd prefer. If I was to change anything, it'd just be a small handful of slight changes, namely I wish instead of the proboscis monkey there was a monkey species more common in zoos. Sticking with the Asia theme, a langur species (e.g., Francois') would be a good choice.

i already did this in the frontier forums, but putting it here and adding the eurasia pack:

Base game

Rename
West African Lion > Lion - make the lion more generic would end multiple problems related to this guy, mainly captive presence problem, being more flexible and nobody need to hear people saying the asiatic lion is needed.
african buffalo > cape buffalo - the ingame buffalo only represents the cape and not the red forest buffalo, because of that the african buffalo is the only animal that need to be more specific.
Timber wolf > Gray wolf - more flexible and less confusing.
Plains zebra > Grant's Zebra - no more confusion about this guy.
Hippo > Common hippo - with the pygmy in the game this just makes more sense.
Indian Elephant - Asiatic elephant - more flexible.

Merged - making this would avoid further discussion and make said animals more flexible, while also making room for other animals.
HBB and grizzly > brown bear.
both tigers > Tiger.

swapped by similar species:
Baird's tapir > Brazilian tapir - i just like the brazilian more.
Black wildebeest > blue wildebeest - more popular and iconic, allowing a different animal in grasslands.
Aldabra giant tortoise > African spurred tortoise - i actually like Aldabra, but spurred is just objectively better.
eastern brown snake > Black mamba (not similar but i guess it's fine) - a more popular snake.
Formosan Black bear > American black bear - make the base game have one endemic NA bear, one endemic from Asia and two more "general" would make the base game bear host better.
goliath beetle > Hercules beetle - more emblematic
Nyala > Greater Kudu - i just like kudus more.

Removed - forgettable species that should be removed to make room from other species completely different.
Bonobo - chimp 2.0, not essential in any way.
Sable antelope - most generic and forgettable antelope
Mexican and Brazilian tarantulas - three tarantulas feels like a overkill

New species
habitat: Polar bear, Jaguar, red kangaroo and king penguin - throwing the headliners of the first four dlcs is something that just feels correct, they are considered the most emblematic fauna of they regions, being the most "basic" animals, because of that i believe they should be in the base game.
exhibit: reticulated python and plumed basilisk - i just really like those guys

Deluxe
Thompson gazelle > scimitar oryx - scimitar is more interesting and unique, while let's be fair that nobody care about thompson

Arctic pack
polar bear > arctic fox - arctic fox just feels better in this pack.
Arctic wolf > Wolverine - beyond the fact this guy is very popular, i also like the idea of having two carnivorans and two ungulates that are brown or white, creating a nice parallel between the animals of said pack.

South America pack:
Jaguar > Maned wolf - having the maned wolf so soon was one of my dreams so yeah.
Red eyed tree frog > Emerald tree boa - now we have a SA exhibit

Austrália pack:
Kangaroo > short beaked echidna - this one was quite difficult because i didn't have any idea what animal i should use as tha kangaroo substitute, but echidna just feels like the best choice.

Aquatic pack
King penguin > African penguin - switching the penguin specie was the obvious choice, despite the fact i'm not so found in the african penguin
Dwarf caiman > Black caiman - most popular caiman, don't really need to say much more.

Southeast Asia animal pack
clouded leopard > Golden pheasant - honestly this pack needs more color, and a colorful bird would solve it, while removing a problematic animal from the game.
dhole > Gaur - biggest bovine in the world vs forgotten dog, yeah sorry dhole.
Proboscis monkey > celebes crested macaque - a little company for the babirusa in this pack.
Leaf insect > king cobra - i literally don't need to elaborate here.

África pack
african penguin > Secretary bird - now we have a cool african bird.

North America animal pack
Arctic fox > wild turkey - a bird is everything that was lacking to this pack.

First anniversary
lemur > Nile Crocodile - Africa have a croc now.

Europe pack
I actually wouldn't change anything in this pack, the animal selection is just way to good.

Wetlands animal pack
spectacled caiman > broad snouted caiman - personal preference.
Lechwe > Proboscis monkey - swapping proboscis means we get another primate at the price of an antelope, seems fair to me.

Conservation pack
Oryx > pere david deer - a second extinct in the wild animal that would be interesting.
Amur leopard > Arabian leopard - more unique.

Twilight pack:
skunk > southern tamandua - something to SA and a more "exotic" animal.
Egyptian fruit bat > common vampire bat - more fitting to the theme, and also a representative to SA.

grassland animal pack
Maned wolf > black howler monkey - another SA animal that is essential to the cerrado.
nine-banded armadillo - Three banded armadillo - personal preference.
Blue wildebeest - blackbuck - an asian antelope, something the game is still lacking.

Tropical pack
lar gibbon > Geoffrey spider monkey - third SA and CA monkey.
Monitor > Scarlet ibis - a proper SA wading bird.

Arid animal pack
Black rhino > Hamadryas Baboon - i don't need to explain.
Dama Gazelle > Greater rhea - yes, it counts.
Sand cat > Ratel - i'm sorry little cat, but badass fearless mustelid is just miles better.
Desert horned viper > thorny devil - most wanted DE right now, also who would say no to that spiky face.

Oceania pack
Quokka > Yellow footed rock wallaby... or literally anything else given that I dislike quokka anyway. With that said, the yellow footed wallaby feels like the best choice, given that it would be another easy to make clone.

Eurasia pack

Wolverine > walrus - swapping the carnivore as the wolverine is already in the arctic pack, the walrus is popular and taxonomically unique among the pinnipeds.
Sloth bear > Lion tailed macaque - again swapping a carnivore for a proper South Asia primate.

clouded leopard > Golden pheasant - honestly this pack needs more color, and a colorful bird would solve it,
Golden Pheasant is not Southeast Asian species, it is endemic to China, maybe go with Silver Pheasant?
Red eyed tree frog > Emerald tree boa - now we have a SA exhibit
We already have two SA snakes in base game, so Mata-Mata turtle might be better?
And which thread did you put this on Frontier Forum, could you post a link?

Oh, i didn't notice it, i will change it.

I actually think mata-mata should have been added in wetlands instead of the newt (didn't make the change here because i forget it), while the tree boa seens fine in the SA pack.

And which thread did you put this on Frontier Forum, could you post a link?

Here: If you could redo all the animals in the base game and DLCs, which would you change?

I'm new to actually playing the game (just got it on console), so could you explain what is meant by 'problematic' when referring specifically to the clouded leopard? I personally think the clouded leopard is very fitting for the pack, and a very common (might I even say iconic?) species in zoos. Removing it doesn't seem sensible even if it is problematic imo.

Since it addition on 1.5 until 1.16, the clouded leopard would constantly jump in slow motion, leading to a lot of leopards to starve to death or simply stay trapped for long periods of time, making it unpleasant to use, and despite this bug being fixed on pc, it's likely still around on console due to nothing added from 1.16 being present in this version.

Besides, SEA pack as a whole was overwhelming when it come to carnivores, half of the pack was compounded by then, and out of the four both the dhole and leopard take the bitter end of the stick. And yes, the clouded leopard is common and at a certain point, iconic in captivity, but definitevelly less than either the golden or lady pheasant.

I've had some ever-changing opinions, since everyone has been talking about that the newest pack would be the last pack, which i'm trying to believe that this is not the last, because if it is me and the whole community will be extremely dissapointed, i still can't believe we actually got a pack with barnyard animals instead of something like an aviary expansion pack or a dlc with the highly requested animals, but regardless it's just an oddball pack, and then i chose more well-known barnyard animals to represent this pack.As you guys can see i chose the more commonly kept domestic animals in international collections based in the zootierliste site, about the other packs, i made them all with 16 animals, since someone in the forum said that a number of 16 animals would be the best realistic as possible, since it's basically plus the number of animals in the animal packs, so i removed lesser-known species and i replaced with more common and well-known species to the general public, so they can build more realistic zoos. and the barnyard pack is the first dlc in my version that doesn't have 16 animals, since the animals in the list are the most well-known to people who see barn animals in american and european zoos. besides if frontier officially confirm this isn't the last dlc i will keep the animal packs name, if not, then i will remove, because i will explain one day.

I've returned here to update my post, since it was confirmed that there will be another pack, also glad that the barnyard animal pack wasn't the last, i wanted to bring the most diverse rosters as i could, as you guys can see, there are a great variety and diversity of animals that are considered the favorites of the community, i also included fully aquatic species, since modders were able to create fully aquatic species and also flying habitat aviary species, even if we don't actually have them in the game, i also fixed a mistake in the grasslands animal pack, because i recently learned that butterflies are counted as 1 species despite being divided in 5 distinct species, and there also the animals that people are often complaining about the lack of them(birds and monkeys), there are also reskins and unique animals as you guys know. To finish this, there is a good balance between well-known, popular to the general public and common in captivity and lesser-known, unpopular to the general public and either uncommon or rare in captivty.

Another revised roster based on personal favor, this time I take considerations about four aspects: 1, try to have all the biomes over the world represented by at least one species, 2, species that can't be done well by the Modders are prior (which require unique models or animations, or have very complicated feather) than those easy clone species 3. I gonna make a big change of exhibit species since many existing exhibit species are considered "unattractive" by many players, due to many duplicated spiders & bugs that most players are less interested in, while herptiles are still insufficient. 4. I take into consideration about DeLadysigner's vote about the popularity of current species in the game, I may remove some species that were voted as least popular species to free the space for other species.
