Hi there, I am returning to the uk after 6 years running a monkey rescue centre in the jungle in Panama,I love howler monkeys and all animals but especially Alouatta Palliata, I miss my children and would love to know where I can find them in England.( monkey children that is)and talk to any one interested in them.

welcome Howlerman. Are you still in Panama now, or back in London already? I'm not sure that London Zoo has howlers but probably somewhere else does.

thanks for the welcome, My sanctuary Is at this moment closed , I still have everything in place ,but have suffered a set back ,All the monkeys have been rehabilitated and released, so I have no worries there. Its a long storey , and the reason why I am heading back to the Uk next week, It involves another party, who basicaly ripped me off . so now I have to rebuild and return when I can Financialy surrvive. remember there is no money in a rescue sanctuary, Its normaly done by people who love animals ,not buisness men

There is a single species of Howler held in the UK, the Black-and-Gold (Alouatta caraya) - groups can be seen at Blackpool Zoo, Exmoor Zoo, Bristol Zoo, Chester Zoo, South Lakes Wild Animal Park, Banham Zoo, Dudley Zoo, Hamerton Zoo, Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, Paignton Zoo, Twycross Zoo, Amazon World Zoo Park, Jersey Zoo and Edinburgh Zoo.

Nearest of these collections to London is Port Lympne, in Kent.

The only other species in Europe is Colombian Red (Alouatta seniculus), which is found in a handful of collections including Zoo Koln and Tierpark Berlin in Germany.

Welcome to ZooChat Howlermonkeymen ! If you cross the North sea you can find also several collections in the Netherlands with Howler monkey ( esp. Apenheul with 2 species ).

thanks, I am looking forward to seeing the local zoos, I have been away fro the Uk for 27 years, so I hope to be pleasantly suprised.

Welcome to Zoochat.

Fascinating to hear about your involvement with a mantled howler monkey rescue facility. Is it the Alouatta Sanctuary in Chiriqui by any chance?

I started Alouatta lodge 8 years ago , It was rented 2 years ago , the people changed the name to Alouatta sanctuary, Have alook at our face book page Alouatta lodge chorcha. (not sanctuary)

OK, I will! And thanks for sharing. I am sure you will find a few like minded primate fans amongst the Zoo Chat cohorts.

Any plans now you are back here what to do next?

BTW: the nearest place for howlers outside the UK is Apenheul (A. caraya and A. seniculus) or Fota Wildlife Park in Ireland and Durrell Zoo in Jersey.

Within the UK: Amazon World, Blackpool Zoo, Exmoor Zoological Park, Bristol Zoo, Chester Zoo, South Lakes Wild Animal Park, Banham Zoo, Dudley (Zoo), Edinburgh Zoo, Hamerton Zoo, Isle of Wight Zoo, Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, Paignton Zoo, Twycross Zoo.

Those within the UK only hold the black howler Alouatta caraya.

I have to build up funds and then return, I was hoping to return this month but I have to be realistic,I want to try and find a partner who can help .

the humidity was never a problem ,our place is elevated on a mountain over looking the sea, so we had breezes, also wearing very little clothing, T shirt and shorts.
