Howletts Wild Animal Park Howletts Wild Animal Park News 2011

Howletts is one of just three other zoos in Europe to house Dusky langurs and with 19 animals the park cares for the biggest collection of this primate in the world.

Yet another case of a collections PR department not doing any research before putting something out.As depending on if you count Israel as Europe depends on if they are 1 or 2 collections out.

Here is a zootierlist link for the species ZootierlisteHomepage

Howletts do have quite a large enclosure for this species and their pair has now had several litters, but presumably no threats of culling here... This latest litter should bring them up to nine animals (4.3.2) I'm still wondering what happened with Edinburgh's widely publicised second litter, but there seems no recent news.

kijos group

Did you notice if there was a male Gorilla in the group nearest the entrance to the Park? This was 'Kijo's group until he died a few years ago and they've since held off adding a new male until the smallest young in the group, born after he died, is/are older.

But they must add a new male sometime...

There is currently no silverback in Kijo's group, it is a difficult dicission to make weather to get a new male or not.
There are currently a few youngsters in this group and if a silverback was to come in he may kill the young gorillas.
The group is very happy so is it worth destroying this ?
On the other hand we are trying to continue the breeding programme so putting a silverback in may be good.
As you can see it is not just as easy as putting a new gorilla in and thats it, there are alot of points to be thought about.
So maybe in a couple of years there may well be a new silverback we will see. :)

As mentioned elsewhere Sayan the female Amur Tiger has departed Howletts for Yorkshire wildlife park as a mate for their male Vladimir:)

Amur Tiger, Altai (born August 2008) was moved to Cologne Zoo in April. He's been paired with a female from France

On an unrelated note, how many elephants are at the park now? My estimate is:

Masa (matriach)
Swana (daughter)
Jamma (daughter)
Mchumba (son)
Tammi
Stavit
Jara (Tammis daughter)
Uzuri (Tammis daughter)
Manzi (Tammis daughter - adopted)
Uma (Swanas daughter)
Etanta (Swanas daughter)
Janu (Swanas Son)
Juva (Stavits son)
Juluka (Stavits daughter)
Shibi
Jums

I make that 16. Can someone confirm or correct?

I think that's spot on!

Janu and Juva have already been moved to P.L., but Jums is still in Howletts. I don`t know if they`ll move him at all. His only daugther of breeding age, Umna, died in early summer 2011. So these 3 (Juva, Janu, Umna) need to be crossed off the list while Swana had another calf - a male.

Presumably they are not (yet) in the same enclosure as the adult 'Kruger' and two females? (There are seperate yards and paddocks at Port Lympne.)

The website does say something about 'them learning from Kruger' so maybe they will be mixed with him later?

Gorilla baby No 131.

Gorilla baby '131' was born at Howletts on 15 August. (Tamba x Kouillou).

Anyone know the sex of this baby?

I'm obviously a bit behind on Howletts news - Do you have dates for the birth, death or moves?

If Umna as you said, is dead, then that will not be good P.R, first a 12 year old female gives birth to her father's calf, then dies. And now a fourteen year old second generation elephant is dead... Horrible.

Wow, what a great shame, two teenage cows dead in within a two year period. Do you know if Justa's female calf is a breeding candidate (when she matures)? I was unsure since she is an inbred animal.
