A baby elephant has been born into the herd on Monday morning, a first for both mother Jama and father Coco
Keepers and staff at Howletts Wild Animal Park, near Canterbury, were delighted to discover a jumbo surprise had joined the elephant herd, slightly earlier than expected on Monday 10th September, in the early hours of the morning.
The baby elephant, born to first time mother, Jama is the first calf to be fathered by bull, Coco since his arrival at the park, three years ago.
Adrian Harland, Animal Director said: ‘What a brilliant way to start a Monday morning! We knew he was on his way, but we initially calculated that he would arrive a little later than he did. Obviously, we’re all absolutely thrilled, and the little calf is thoroughly enjoying himself, meeting his new family and being fussed over by the herd.’
After a gestation period of approximately 20 months, the little elephant, weighed in at an impressive 120kgs soon after birth. Once fully grown, the youngster could top over 6 tonnes.
Howletts Wild Animal Park is home to the largest herd of elephants anywhere in the country. The latest addition to the herd, takes the numbers to 13.
Line Monange, Deputy Head of Elephant Section added: ‘Mum and baby are doing very well, supervised by grandmother Masa. Although it is early days yet, the little one spent all day bonding with the herd and we’re confident that he will soon become a firm favourite with our visitors.’
Visitors to the wild animal park will be able to see the adorable calf, as he explores his new home in the elephant sand paddocks every day.
