Huge Elephant Exhibits in European Zoos

UntBwe, I don't think your Whipsnade figure is quite right (unless it's only the size of one of the largest paddock).

The total elephant area comes to about 7 acres whereas your figure is about 5 acres. Whipsnade also has a second paddock and a bull paddock which must equate to the 7 acres

Edit: Also very impressed with the size of the Knowsley paddock. 9 acres is very good and it is grassed as well.

Cabárceno: 200,000 m2 (!) including several yards
Wow, that's impressive, 50 acres! That makes me happy :)
Where is this place, what species do they have and do they successfully breed?

^^
This place is located in the North of Spain, Cantabria autonomous region, near to Santander (major Cantabria´s city)in the village of Cabarceno. They used the older iron Roman mines, for to build a great and huge animal park (seems a safari) but not totally the same. The African elephants herd is the unique that breed successfully in Spain...

And now, talking about Bioparc :D I'm not 100% sure, but the elephant paddock (outdoor) are over 4.000 square meters, more or less.

Keeper, do you know the size of Terra Natura's Asian Elephant enclosure?

seemed very large when i saw it

Yeah pictures I've seen in Benidorm in birds eye view it looks to be very large.

seemed very large when i saw it

20,250 m2 (4 paddocks of 15,270 + 2,340 + 1,600 + 1,040 m2)

About Whipsnade: these are figures of the European Elephant Group dated November, 2006: 18,000 m2 of grassland + paddocks; 300 + 1,600 for 0.1 + offspring, and 700 + 800 m2 for bulls.

Hi UntBwe! where I can find information on the size of the installation of terra natura elephants? many thanks!

will add some images of beauvals elephant exhibit (grass paddock only) to gallery though my photos dont do justice the size of enclosure.

The Benidorm enclosure truely is great, plenty of water, but gives a out a dry area as in a drought then there is a sudden waterhole.
Has Luka successfully bred with Petita?

I agree with you, dragon(ele)nerd the enclosure of the elephants seemed a "desert", but this is due to the weather in Benidorm is very dry, and some 15 elephants walk everywhere, every day will not help to maintain the grass.
There is no news of any copulation between "Luka" and "Petita"

That's a shame thought maybe a calf by her would raise her herichy within the herd a bit as it has with other cows in the past.
Yep, same thing has occured at Melbourne, were in a drought to the point you can't water you grass at any time. Unless you have a special permit, Flemington racecourse is one exception.
Our elephant exhibit used to be filled with grass. No it's totally all gone. Bong Su and Mek Kapah at first I noticed kept on munching away on it. Plus the drought and tramlping of the additional elephants made it die off a lot more earlier.

Benidorm not leave animals to die for lack of grass or water, but do not use the relatively little water they have, in to grow grass.

Their pools for the elephants are great! Does anyone how any good photos of Luka, The ones at Port Lympne that Iv'e seen are blurry but the Benidorm ones he looks like a real elephant bull. he is a really good looking elephant, I think one of the tallest in europe.

Just read an article that Petita is due in November 2009.

Toe cologne Elephant exhibit, inside and outside, is probably two hectares, 5 acres, but it counts in all the ariticfical rocks, the pools, the walls so whats left for around 15 elephants ? Not very much, so this exhibit is defenitely to small for the biggest land mammal on earth...And for elphants size means a lot...The same with Hagenebck, to many elepahnst, to small exhibit. But in this case, it dosn't matter, becuase the elphants are standing the whole day at the exhibits moat, to get food from the visitors, watched by the keepers, which are not allow the elephants to leave...I've seen and filmed that several times on each of my visits to Hagenbeck...

There are some big natural exhibits in England, I think, Knowsley does have a huge paddock for them, Howletts and Port Lympne also, Sigean in France...

So have I, and whilst I agree it's too small, they obviously want to be at the edge of the moat as the bull is there all the time and he doesn't have a keeper with him. It's not a case of the keepers forcing them to eat, they're elephants, they eat one hell of a lot!

How often do you visit Hagenbeck ? I do it several times in a year, and the keepers don't let the elephants go, if they have enough, yes, elephants are not eating all the time of the day, but the vistors want to feed the elphants, so they have to stay the whole day at the moat.

I was there on a very busy day and the bull never left the moat side once, I'm sure it's no different any other day. And he doesn't have a keeper to his side.

wow, must be one of the zoos most main attractions, I know at sinagpore after every elephant show they are allowed to be feed by visitors. But being forced to stay near the moat even when their not hungry is something to me, then again it would be a very long time until the elephants become full!
The keepers themselves must not give the elephant much fruit to eat being that so much is already given to them ??
