Hunter Valley Zoo Hunter Valley Zoo News

Cheetah update:

Jabari (2014) has been transferred to Mogo Wildlife Park to join their female, Imani (2017). His departure follows on from reports by @Tigergal he was the only Cheetah at Hunter Valley.

Whether this leaves Hunter Valley with Cheetah is unclear. An icon resembling a Jaguar on the map implies they still hold the species, so my guess would be they received Imani’s sister from Mogo (who’s disappeared from their collection). I will contact the zoo to confirm.

Hopefully they can put their Caracals on display.

I went to the Hunter Zoo yesterday. They had a Maned wolf in the normal enclosure and a sign that said Maned wolf on the old cheetah enclosure. (Was too hard to see in the pipe bit though - Was wondering if the 2 in the original enclosure got separated). No Serval out but the Caracal was in the enclosure I've previously seen the Serval in (guessing they might rotate).

That’s an amazing photo!

Yes that does sound likely re. the purposing of the Cheetah exhibit. It may be a temporary replacement if there was no signage; or an indication they intend to focus on Maned wolf long term.

Is the exhibit next to the cheetah still empty?

What a fantastic absolute brilliant photo <3

From socials:

Lions Snow, Chitwah and Roc have transferred from Mogo Wildlife Park. It's not that surprising considering that Mogo now has Baako, Evelyn and their cubs (with whom Snow, Chitwah and Roc were rotating use of the exhibit).

I wonder if Hunter Valley still has Phoenix, Maji and the white lions as well?

Considering Hunter Valley only have two exhibits; it would indicate one of the two groups has perhaps left to another collection. Unless they plan on integrating the new trio with Phoenix and Maji, which I find highly unlikely.

Mogo’s white lion pair is getting on in years, so another possibility is that they’ve passed on and either Phoenix/Maji or Kovu/Nala have transferred from Hunter Valley to replace them. There’s been a lot of transfers between these facilities, which are under the same management.

It wouldn’t be possible to integrate Snow’s pride with Phoenix/Maji.

January 2024 groupings:

0.1 Maji (11/12/2020) Baako x Zuri

Mafuta and Mnandi would be turning 18 in a week's time, so hopefully if they are still alive, Mogo will post something for their birthdays which will confirm this. The other possibility is that Kovu has either died/been transferred elsewhere, and Nala is the new white lion female at Altina - did we ever confirm her identity?

There was never any official announcement of the deaths of Kuchani and Asali, so I imagine the eventual deaths of these two elderly lions will go unmentioned. Like you say, mention of their birthdays on socials is the best indicator.

On that note, Snow has reached her 20th year, which is good to see. There’s eight years between Chitwa and Roc, but he’s an intact male so it’d be easy enough to integrate him with a female when his mother and grandmother have both passed. Due to their age (and Roc’s presence), we can rule out a male joining them.
