Chester Zoo Hunting dogs

In the current edition of Z magazine for members, Mark Pilgrim says that the exhibit should be open at Easter next year.

I was surprised that I could not find a single mention of the 'Natural Vision' plans in the same Z magazine mentioned above .

Is it just a money matter for this new super zoo before anything starts to happen????

I think planning for 'Heart of Africa' goes ahead this month, but I think the project will be on hold anyway due to funding cuts by the government.

Would the zoo give an Easter opening date if the funding hadn't been approved or found from somewhere else? It would cause a lot of disappointment if that were the case.

Ahh, sorry. I think I've crossed wires. When there was mention of Natural Vision I was talking about the Heart of Africa Biodome. Fingers crossed that the wild dogs will be on-show by Easter. Heart of Africa will be a good few years yet, I imagine.

 me too jahvan rhino

Anyway, roll on the hunting dogs :)

Well said, they will make a brilliant addition (though I already fill up my memory card, I'll have to get another if they bring anything else in soon ;p)

You can't have too much memory!
What would you do if something spectacular happened - like watching and photographing a birth - and you ran out of bytes?
I carry 5 cards totalling 19 GB ;) and I've never run out yet.

If something so spectacular happened then I'd be forced to delete a couple of pics at the moment. I have a 1GB compact flash card that allows me to take approx 256 photos (thats what it says when my card is empty, but my brother managed to get 300 pics on it recently). I might try and get another for christmas, but unfortunatly they are not too cheap when on a very limited budget (plus battery is usually used up with one card, so there is more expense in a second battery). Chester is the only zoo where I have actually filled my card though.

The alien would probably teleport back home instead of waiting for you to delete some shots.

I'm with Alan on this, you should always have storage headroom. I carry at least 32GB and have on occasion needed more (although I always shoot RAW, never JPEG). You can get a 4GB type 1 CF card [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Transcend-Ultra-Speed-Compact-Flash/dp/B000VY7HYM/"]from Amazon[/ame] for £9.99 these days.

Hehe, that's a point. I will try and get one soon, hopefully in time for when I'm a member in December :).

I've never really tried RAW properly (just bits of a mess around that I've deleted straight after). I've read up about it though and it doesn't sound as good as JPEG for a few reasons.

1) Whilst my camera has been known to take between 200-300 shots in JPEG, I get a limit of a measly 60 in RAW.
2) RAW images are not as sharp as JPEGs (or so I've read).
3) RAW files cannot be manipulated later (again, so I've heard). So much so that they can be used in court cases, simply because nobody can alter anything about them.
4) The processing seems as if it will be a pain. Now I can simply plug my camera in and click import, and after a few mins they are all up for me to see in Picasa photo viewer. However, I've heard that most things won't display RAW images, and you have to buy/download special converters etc.

I could be wrong in all of this, but I just prefer to shoot in JPEG for some reason (and [in my humblest opinion] I have taken a fair few decent pictures that I'm really proud of).

Anyway, just my opinion ;p

I'm with Alan & SMR on this you should always carry spare cards I carry 20GB spare plus the one I'm using and a spare battery comes in very handy

You can pick them up from most supermarkets or Electrical stores
keep your eyes open for special offers asda were doing 2 x 4GB for £10.00 the other day don't know if they are still doing it

Ahhh cool, I shall have a look next time I'm in (though regrettably that won't be before my next zoo visit). Thanks for the heads up :)

I won't go further off-topic here, but I think I may start a thread about this sort of thing in the Photography section soon. See you there.

See you there :).

On-topic, has anybody seen plans of the enclosure anywhere (drawings etc?) and what Chester's situation will be with the Wild Dogs? I think I've seen plans somewhere, but can't remember where. (Also, are the porcupines a permenant fixture where they are (old Przewalski's Horse hardstanding) or will this also be given over to the dogs?

In the interests of drawing a line: RAW vs JPEG. And for what it's worth, working with RAW is no more difficult these days than JPEG in terms of software support.

The plans were posted as a case study on the zoo's old website, so that's probably where you saw them. I'm told they've been changed quite significantly at least twice since, for example, the old bus will no longer be part of the exhibit.

And yes, the area will encompass the old Prezwalski horse stable, so the porcupines are only temporary residents.
