Highland Wildlife Park HWP 2011

It brought back fond memories of the beaver enclosure at Chester - sticks, mud and not a single beaver in sight. I've never seen a beaver and thought HWP would be my best chance. Wrong again.

I've stood at that pond many times and have yet to see one!

I was delighted to see Walker, he looks like one happy bear ....Can anyone tell me why he's called 'Walker'?

He came from Holland with that name, and no-one has ever explained (AFAIK) how he got it. To the commercially minded, it does open up sponsorship opportunnities with the shortbread company of the same name!!

We managed to see both of the beavers last year (Oct). They were out & fairly active, just before the tigers were fed.
I posted pics in the gallery.
Never seen one at Edinburgh Zoo though..........

Somebody said that Walker was named after a type of train?

Apparently Walker got his name as his mum was called Huggies after the brand of nappies, and Walkers are also a brand of nappies.

Musk Ox?

Just been having a mooch around Zootierliste, & it lists HWP as having (Barren Ground) Musk Ox.
Have they definitely (FINALLY) arrived?

Not as far as I know,it looks like another case of somebody jumping the gun again, like the time when Mercedes was at both Highland and Edinburgh at the same time on zootierlist, also the fact they have said nothing on facebook about them yet.makes me think they haven't arrived yet!

The musk oxen are undergoing vaccinations and testing thereafter, and will not arrive until this is complete. The enclosure is ready however!

I'm glad they have made a map but the whole thing is really quite amateurish and unattractively put together in my view. At least they have a better website now.

A new enclosure for 2.0 European forest reindeer has opened next to the European wolves in the forest .

Probably last bit of news for 2011, according to the zoo map, 0.5 white lipped deer have arrived from Edinburgh and Eurasian otter will be joining the collection for 2012.

ISIS lists Edinburgh as currently having 2.5 White-lipped Deer, so if 0.5. have now moved to HWP does that mean the 2.0 will shortly be moved too, or have they got more than this? So are Edinburgh splitting their group between the two locations?

I think it has always been the intention to bring the white lipped deer north to the park, so in my opinion it won't be long before the stags join the females.

HWP is probably a lot more suitable for them spacewise. I wonder why they went to Edinburgh first- was it a quarantine issue perhaps?

I think it was, besides a few species all the new hoofstock has originated from Edinburgh.
Which would now free up a large area of land at the top of the hill at Edinburgh, which i believe was originally earmarked as the site of the new rhino house, if this is still the case i don't know.

Interesting the otters are coming from Edinburgh - might be more chance of seeing them!!

I wonder if the location on the map is accurate - on the area behind the forest walk/wildcats. IIRC the old otter house was to be converted to house the Ravens - or has this changed?

I would think the otters will be going into the old otter enclosure next to the tigers as it will appear to be only temporary.
