I-Spy Zoos and Wildlife Book

Recently I visited the Welsh Mountain Zoo (review to come later) and in the gift shop they had the I-Spy Zoos and Wildlife book, the same one that I had as a child in the early 90's. For those that are not familar with I-I-Spy books they were a range of books which contained pictures of 'things' you had to spot, e.g. things at a beach or on a car journey. Each 'thing' has a point value and once you've spotted a certain number of 'things' you could send away for a badge (along with 20p). (Some more info here - I-Spy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

The I-Spy Zoos and Wildlife book contains animals that you could see at the zoo and at only £1.50 I decided to pick one up. Different animals have different point values attached to them, the harder it is to see the animal at a zoo the higher points they have.

As the book must have been written in the 1980's it is interesting to see what value each animal has. For example you would only get 5 points for seeing a polar bear or dolphin but you would get 10 points for a meerkat and 15 points for a lemur or otter.

It is also has animals you would not be able to see in Britain anymore - dolphins, giant panda and kiwi.

I remember that!! I had one as a child, a reaaaalllly old one, with black and white photos. I was the first time I heard of a Liger :)

I swear I have one of these (but it must be one of the more recent prints though - possibly mid 90s?) hidden away some where

could you scan an image of the cover?

I'm affraid I don't have a scanner. The one I have is blue with a picture of a leopard on the front. This edition has colour pictures and does not have a liger listed. The copywrite is 1997 however i don't think it had been updated from the one I had in the early 90's.

Thanks anyway.

The more I think about it, I think my "copy" may have actually been a DK book with a similar concept

I have several of these but then I lent them to my brother and never saw them again. I think there was a nature one, on a road journey and several others.

does anyone know how i can get my hands on a one?

The non-zoo ones like I've got (castle, the supernatural, etc) can be picked up for less a £1 in Tourist Info officies usually - least that's where mine all came from. I would guess that the zoos ones would be on sale in the zoo giftshop somewhere.

I've not got the zoo one, but do have (somewhere maybe?) Pets, Wild Birds, Insects and 'Things at the Beach'. Used to love them but never got the badge.
