I was wandering what primate species were available to private exotic keepers at the moment in the uk with or without a dwa.
 
I know alot of the Ruffed Lemurs in the UK are avaliabe and some are hybrid unsure if you can 'buy' them so to speak your best bet is to contact South Lakes Wild Animal Park they have one of the largest Lemur colonies(so they say!)

I think you may be referring to Ruffed Lemurs, as Ringtails are a single species and so incapable of hybridisation, whereas Ruffed have several colour forms/subpecies (red,b/w, belted) two of which have been mixed in the past. I believe quite a few Ruffed Lemurs (including pure b/w's) are kept privately nowadays. I've also seen them referred to as 'Roughed' Lemurs...:rolleyes:
 
Thanks Pertinax, I keep getting my Lemur species mixed up as I have just been watching a programme about Lemurs, Indri's etc.

They are alot of Ring-tailed Lemurs in the UK too Blackpool,South Lakes etc-When I was last up at South Lakes their plan was to move around 15 of the Ring-tailes there.
 
There are quite a few primate species kept privately including tamarins, marmosets, goeldis monkey, plenty of lemur species, squirrel monkeys, slow loris, potto, small amount of capuchins, various other monkey species and I've even heard that gibbons may be kept also.

Alot of these primate keepers are very secretive and rightly so. Unfortunatly some species are being sold in pet shops Where anybody with a bit of money could buy them. However there are also specialist pet shops that do really well to find perfect keepers for their animals.

I haven't seen a monkey(or any other Primate) for sale in a Pet Shop for very many years now. The old style 'high street' Petshops seem to be suffering competition from and disappearing rather in the face of the big 'PetsAreUs' and Garden centre type outlets. However I'm sure there are still some old style pet stores in our bigger cities. I'm not disputing there may be primates for sale too, as there seem to be many private holders nowadays, but maybe a lot of these sales are done out of sight of normal trading?
 
For a long while i didn't see any primates for sale in petshops, last time was in the late 90's but there has recently been a small ammount of petshops going into keeping primates.
This is possibly due to a petshop wholesaler selling many primates on their sales list and I have seen some rarely kept animals such as marbled polecats, goeldis monkey and zorrila on the list in past few years, listed amoungst the usual hamsters, rats, mice and birds.
 
I was very intrigued by this thread as I too can often be found wandering around by primates, but it turns out I can't help after all. :)
 
Before buying any primates you might want to take a look at the BALAI directive....most zoos are BALAI approved and therefore wont sell to the private sector....

And to add to that any animals that are CITIES appendixes listed (not sure which one!) cannot be sold.
 
An Article 10 is CITES licence allowing the sale of an Appendix A species but unless I am mistaken to trade in primates in the UK they must be BALAI approved......BALAI is a bit of a nightmare, not sure how it applies to the private sector but certainly zoos have to be approved to keep and in particular move primates.

I thought BALAI just concerned te quarantine of animals?

Not at all, take a look at the attached link, it refers to trade and biosecurity in approved collections, certainly from a zoo's point of view, if they are BALAI approved then they certainly cannot trade with non approved collections when it comes to to primates, as I said I am not sure how it applied to the private sector but a quick chat with Animal Health would explain all, just make sure you ask for someone that works with BALAI.
