I work in a Zoo, What can I post?

As most of you know, I am employed at the Darling Downs Zoo, and have been an active member of this forum for the last 1525 days (!), and for the past couple of years, a ZooChat moderator.

As you read my posts you may have gathered, even though I am employed by a zoo, I am still free to maintain and pursue my own opinions and interests on the forum. This is supported and encouraged by my employer, who is also on here, forum member Steve Robinson.

Unfortunately this is not the case for many forum members who work in Zoos, a number of these members have contacted me, both privately and publicly about this. I won’t name names; these members know who they are.

Many Zoo’s make their staff sign privacy agreements, some even a new one for every different section of the zoo they work in! I understand that these are to protect the zoo from misinformation being published, and in turn the staff from and flow on effects of this.
I for one would never sign one that is effectively a ‘Shut Up’ order, I would be more than happy to sign something saying that I cannot make statements on behalf of the zoo, but if someone asks me if our Silver Spotted Dodos are breeding, I would tell them exactly the same as I would tell the public, is they approached me at the zoo. Some members can’t even say this!

We (most of us) live in a society of free speech, and I wont be losing this anytime soon.

What I find absolutely repulsive is the way that some organisations monitor this forum, and use it against their staff. I know of one member who was clearly told “we know you post on there (ZooChat) and are watching”. If you can’t trust the person, why employ them!

This forum is one of (if not) the largest Zoo Enthusiast forums on the World Wide Web, and I won’t stand for people trying to use it just to put down, harass and bully people.
We have a great base of members, from Zoo Groupies (that term Patrick used all those years ago!) to Zoo Directors, Keepers, even the Circus People! Everyone is entitled to use this forum to its full advantage, to ask those questions they want answered!

Wow! i fully agree with what you are saying...but i do have to say some zoos might do this to be careful =(

I work and study in one such organisation and I would have to say that it doesn't really bother me that I have to sign numerous privacy statments. I have seen what can happen to the reputation of the organisation and my friends and coworkers when information that simply isn't true or only half the story is spread and these agreements help to stop that information coming from inside the organisation. We have all staff and vollies sign the agreements and for particually the latter it's important as people who only come in one day a week may feel that they know what's going on and share this information when it's really only a small peice of a big puzzle.

9 times out of 10 it's my choice not to say anything out of loyalty to my friends, the animals and the organisation I work with and not because I've sigend a piece of paper.

As one of the few American zoo workers who posts on here I have strict, self-imposed guidelines as to what I post. If it has to do with my own zoo I only will post information that is public knowledge. Most often it will be postings from local media sources. If it has not been made public I will not post those items, instead I will wait to see how they play out. As for zoos I don't work at, well, all's fair in love and business.

For me personally, when it comes to my employer I only publicly post what is public knowledge already. However my personal opinions about my employer and other zoos are just that and my employer should not be able to tell me not to share my personal opinions. Plus jay has a habit of posting things before I get a chance to anyway. Zoo associations however are a different kettle of fish. When it comes to things I say I couldn't give a **** what a zoo association says even if they can make life difficult in this industry. Interestingly I work for the same organisation as torie and never never signed a specific privacy statement. My employer also isn't the best at telling staff when it Is and is not ok to say something to the public. Also if I am asked a specific question by a member of the public that obviously knows the industry i will NOT lie! If it is something that is being kept quiet I will just say the usual I am not in a position to discuss this.

I recently found out some information was able to be released to the public on this forum when jay broke the news.

Can someone please explain to me - what is a "sticky"?

A thread which has been "stuck" to the top of the thread list by a moderator. Generally, these would be reference material, help or FAQs etc.

This thread doesn't really qualify, so I've unstuck it.

I vol for my hometown zoo ... I do not publicise anything to do with my zoo. I our domain, it is part and parcel of the communications dept. I personally have no qualms with that - mainly out of loyalty to zoo as well as zoo keeper/curatiorial staff I know/respect relationship.

Besides, as a vol you do hear stuff that IMO should not and must not become public knowledge ... as it is in the private domain. And I do not seek to judge/misjudge ..., and keep any private opinions just that.

Not to say, I do not feel free to comment ..., just I reserve the right to have those opinions remain private property.

I post things in regards to my home zoo purely if they are already being discussed, and even then, I'd rather not post details of anything that could get me into trouble. If it's not being whispered about then I keep hush. I don't want to lose my position over something trivial brought up in coffee table talk.
