Dartmoor Zoo Iberian Wolves

A new species for Dartmoor - The park has reported via facebook today that coming in the near future are Iberian Wolves in place of the previously kept Timber Wolves, the last pair of which have now been transfered to Woburn (I'd assume in exchange for the incoming Iberians?!)

Only further details atm are that they will be housed in the now empty Timber wolf enclosure which is currently being renovated in preparation

A good move for Dartmoor or trouble written all over it?? I'm not sure what to think at this stage...!

Perhaps it will depend on whether these new wolves show themselves well, at at Blackpool, or are virtually invisible as at Howletts & Port Lympne.

I'm a bit surprised Woburn are taking Dartmoor's other wolves- it must be very difficult to add a strange older pair to an existing(?) group, if that is indeed their aim.

It seems Woburn have split their Iberian Wolf group between three collections including themselves (Dartmoor, Woburn and Blackpool) I think Woburn will probably will keep some. There has probably been fighting as I know that's why Blackpool received 1.4. I think Dartmoor's pair of Timber Wolves will be mixed with Woburn's current 0.3 (?).

Have Dartmoor really only go 2 timber wolves left?? They had a large group a few years back including young adults bought in from Howletts/Port Lympne just before the sale of the park.

This either means allot of wolves have died or some have been moved 'quietly' since Ben Mee took over??

Iberian wolf by their ecology live is far smaller packs and offspring from earlier years disperse rather quickly. I am well pleased Woburn has now broken up the big group (and ... better still ... that more UK collections now hold Iberian wolves, being an iconic European wolf subspecies).

Personally, I really do hope more European zoos will focus on Eurasian wolf ssp. instead of yer regular American timber wolves and ye all hybrid/crossbreed wolf (lest of course they are the Arctic white wolves ... for which ahum ... I seem to have a soft spot).

If Woburn send a pair to Dartmoor, does it leave them with any now?

Remember the last time I went they still had 4. Changing one wolf species for another seems a bit of a waste of resources to me. But then financial management doesn't appear to be a strong point.
