Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park - Species List (September 2025)

This is the first comprehensive species list for the Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park to be posted on ZooChat! The Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park, often referred to as the “Best Little Zoo in the West,” first opened in 1935 and is currently owned and operated by the City of Idaho Falls Parks and Recreation Department. I’ve put together a comprehensive species list for the collection, noting subspecies where appropriate to provide more taxonomic detail. I have followed the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species for all common and scientific names. For clarity, I have divided the collection based on the Zoo's major exhibitions. All mixed-species exhibits are grouped together as well.

While not seen on my visit, the Zoo's most recent USDA routine inspection (November 2024) and 2025 Breeding and Transfer Plans from the Species Survival Plans indicate the Zoo holds 1.1 Prevost's squirrel (Callosciurus prevostii) and 0.1 fosa (Cryptoprocta ferox) in their collection as well. The Prevost's squirrels were on display in the Primate Discovery Center, in the habitat now housing rock hyrax and white-crested laughingthrush, during my visit in 2023. The fosa, a 15-year-old female named Shilo, has no permanent habitat viewable to guests. It would also seem the Zoo houses a young 1.1 pair of Raggiana bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea raggiana) that is currently off-exhibit.

Mammals in the Zoo's animal ambassador program include domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus domesticus), lesser hedgehog tenrec (Echinops telfairi), southern three-banded armadillo (Tolypeutes matacus), and long-tailed chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera). These species are housed alongside other reptile and invertebrate animal ambassadors in the building labeled "Habitat" on the Zoo's map.

Thanks very much for the list of species at the zoo, but what did you actually think of the place? ;) Are you going to do a review of some kind? I visited this zoo in 2012, and I typed up a big review near the end of my Snowleopard's 2012 Road Trip thread. At that time, the zoo had 400 animals on 7 acres and the same general layout as it does now. Some of the species are on the slightly rarer side, such as Collared Brown Lemur, Bornean Gibbon (aka Southern Grey Gibbon), Red-flanked Duiker and even Sloth Bears aren't very common. A few of the exhibits were tight on space and I'm sure that hasn't changed, with the Asian zone being my favourite back then.

I just posted the species list for Zoo Boise which I visited during this same trip. Maybe I will post a review of the two AZA Idaho facilities. I also visited the World Center for Birds of Prey which was a delight! For an often "forgotten" state, Idaho has a lot to offer for zoo nerds.

Quite a neat collection for its size and well - balanced - with a good deal of small songbirds and an particular focus on cranes, macaws and primates as well as the North America native fauna theme.

I also would love to see you do a review of Tautphaus and Boise Zoos...
