Also, I don't understand why NA zoos get rare captive animals only not breed these, so they have long-time single individuals, and yet it annoys me every time I think about it

It usually implies the species is a hold over from an import a long time back, and the species simply never took off. In a few cases it's simply a species that chanced to be confiscated or rehabbed that was rare.
