Auckland previously planned for a Lemur walkthrough near the entrance. Plans indicated it would replace their current exhibit and the neighboring exhibits of which one is now empty, and the other housing Red Panda.I agree. The Rainforest originally opened to house Siamang and macaques from Asia; and various monkeys and tarantulas from South America. The Siamang pair raised several offspring in that exhibit, making it a hive of activity throughout the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.
New Zealand doesn’t currently have an IHS for tapir, but with renewed interest in Australia, it could follow.
I’ll otherwise be interested to see what happens with the lemur as with three elderly female RTL, the zoo has the option to phase out soon. Going back to 2014 and there was interest in acquiring Red ruffed lemur.
Priority will presumably be on the new nature playground in the coming years and then the Rhino extension eventually. Still I would be very surprised if there wasn't any further word on this come five years time.
I remain of the opinion that a large walkthrough space featuring both Ring Tails and Red Ruffed Lemurs would be a nice addition to the entrance precinct.
