In case anyone's curious about the birds in their area, I used to struggle with bird identification myself. However, I've recently discovered the Merlin ID app, which I find incredibly helpful. It not only identifies birds visually but also through their calls. Plus, it's free of charge.

It is a great one and it links well to their other app eBird as well. Really good for bird song in particular (as long as you have a signal).

Nord University Bird ID is good at quizzing you on your Western Palearctic birds, in which you can opt for your country of choice, level of difficulty and whether you want a picture, sound or both pictures and sounds quiz. Be warned the offline exercises throw in all of the recorded bird species in the palearctic so unless you know a fair few American and African vagrants, this one can be a pretty tricky ordeal.

Merlin has pretty good data for basically any bird you might encounter in the world. Unfortunately, it isn't supported on iPhone 6, so I'm out of luck. Sometimes, it's best to stick with a field guide, but it's interesting to watch many different bird ID apps develop along with the advancement of AI. "Smart Bird ID" is supposed to identify birds by camera. Unfortunately, many apps like these can only do birds in America.
