  • The report provides evidence that some of the beech wood used in Ikea’s flagship Terje chair and other products came from a state-run forestry enterprise in Ukraine that was violating the law.
  • Ikea’s suppliers in Ukraine harvested logs from the Velkyy Bychkiv state forestry enterprise during a “silence period” when the type of logging they were carrying out was legally prohibited.
  • Campaigners say the Forest Stewardship Council, one of the world’s largest and most influential timber certification organizations, failed to note or take action on the illegalities.

Reading the article, I'm not sure if Ikea was aware the wood was illegal or not?

I am not surprised whereas at home Sweden and all Scandinavia logging is well enforced IKEA company has for years cut down Korean pine forests unsustainabily in eastern Siberia. Something they have as yet never been prosecuted for, their environmental record away from home is not good.

Thank you for sharing this with me. One thing I know about Sweden and Greta Thunburg has talked about is that when it comes to environmental extraction and overconsumption, it has always been outsourced and it makes their record on these issues look better than it actually is. This might be a tall order, but I actually support a global ban on deforestation, more widespread tariffs and protectionist trade policy, localization and circular economics as a way to combat these issues. Where did you hear about Ikea unsustainably cutting down specifically Korean Pine Forests?

@UngulateNerd92, it was in packaged info material for the recovery programs of ALT Amur leopard in eastern Siberia along with Amur tiger. I will look it up for you.

Thank you, I appreciate it. If that logging posed threats for Amur tigers and Amur leopards, those should be major penalties in and of themselves...

Recycling wood when and where possible. Use of tree farming...
It can often be hard to draw the line between tree farms and forests. And sustainable logging can often benefit a forest more than hurt it. Recycling wood would work for a little bit but as things rot and get cut it would stop being effective pretty fast.

Fair points. Another option, probably the best at this point is recycle what we can but also make it legal mandate across the board for all logging to be done in a sustainable way.
