Twycross Zoo I'm baffled by Twycross Zoo

Since being known as the World Primate Centre have they done any major things with the primates?
Not that I know of. Bele compiled, from records, the breeding performances of many(most) of their Primate species. In many cases the results were very poor, with only occassional births for many of the Guenon, Asian and South American species and an equal or higher number of deaths. In a few species there has been no breeding at all. The best thing they did was send a couple of non-breeding Whitesides Guenons to a zoo in France to contribute to a breeding programme.

I would like to see many of the other less successful Guenons{Hamlyns, Dianas, Rolloway, Allens Swamp, Mona, etc etc) and other Primate species too leave the collection, in favour of setting up better displays for a smaller number of primate species, those they are more sucessful with. Get away from the 'postage stamp' collection of Primates they currently have. The sheer number of primate species is their claim to fame, (look at the list on their website, it is huge) rather than any major breeding successes with most of them.

Well they cannot even manage to send out a reminder to me when my TZA membership ran out so how they can run a zoo is beyond me.

No phoned the zoo today its a computer problem with the wonderfull new system the zoo has put into to run the membership it just didn`t send out the renewal forms, but i do know where you are coming from the thought had crossed my mind, just wondering if the zoo`s management have been reading this forum because of this link Twycross Zoo keepers spend £100,000.00 on animal welfare

All i will say is that will go no where in sorting out the problems that have been mentioned in this thread, but i suppose its a start.

I agree...

It is a tiny step and basically just 'set dressing'. An 'occupational enrichment' door for the Orangutans is not QUITE on the same level as renovating the entire enclosure or knocking it down and building a decent one...;)

i think this has been planned for a while, i think its a good idea to get all keepers involved in enrichment and a bit of enclosure design.

i think as the "world PRIMATE centre" they should concentrate on the primates & send most of the other animals to other zoos & collections. they need to sort out the existing enclosures rather than spending the money on a new species:mad:

Your eloquence is both riveting and fascinating reading. What is your point anyway? You do not like Twycross Zoo or what?

Various forumsters - including yours truly - have written on the subject and not always in favour of the Zoo (e.g. management of elephants and great apes could be improved upon .. No point in going into full details as it must be by now a familiar subject and can be read over in this thread).

That said, there is no reason to rant and rave about the World of Primates Zoo. The hard economic truth is that people will not flock to a zoo just to see primates - it gets somewhat one-sided and the animal and plant world are anything but that. People wish for seeing lions, tigers, elephants, rhinos, hippos and other mega vertebrates. It is a fact you cannot ignore.

Twycross Zoo - while admittedly emphasising more and more its wonderful primate collection and improving their exhibitry, must invest in maintaining other mega vertebrates to bring in the public.

Well, if you have a sack full of trillions of pounds, we will give you the keys ... (but if not, please discuss Twycross Zoo on a more level playing field and then you are welcome to make your point). :D

Little kids like primates.
