Immigrating with pets? How to transport?

Just wondering how many of you have actually relocated and brought your pets with you? My aunt is immigrating soon and she is worried about her two cats. She doesn't want to leave them behind but on the other hand, they are really quite old.

Anyone have any experience?
 
My brother spends the winter months always in a warmer climate about five hours airtravel away.
He took his two cats each year even when they were already quite old. What I don't know whether it is important how old they are when they have to get used to it. They got some sort of tranquilizer before the start.
To accustom them to the travel box may also help.
 
thanks! appreciate the reply :) they are rather old and any undue travelling stress might cause them harm
