Import Laws In Australia

I would like to set up a thread about what animals can't be imported into Australia. There are some that i already know like pigs, all birds and hippos/pygmy hippos but i would like to know a few others:-

  • Horses...I would like to see some more types of asses
Tapirs...If they are allowed hopefully it will be brazilian or mountain
Monkeys...Couldn't all our dying populations (De Brazza's, Lion-tailed macaque, Leaf Monkeys) be resurrected instead of just focusing on breeding up already existing stock.
    Cattle...For Anoa and guar
Big cats...for the same reasons as monkeys
And what are the limits on reptiles.

I am currently beginning an investigation into whether it is possible to import a few new capuchins (C. apella) to counteract the large amount of inbreeding we are currently experiencing with this species. We aren't an ARAZPA org so I will talk to the TAG coordinator, but we might need to go it alone.

Just seen that there are 54 in the region on ISIS. I know that their records aren't always true, but are you considering an import from within the region, such as N.Z or completely new bloodlines from Europe or the states?

I need to find out if the NZ animals are the founder stock of ours first. All of the animals here now are related, from what I can find so far. So if the NZ cappies are unrelated I would start there, if not then investigate the possibility of other countries. I don't know if this is feasible, but we have to do something, or there will be nowhere to go with this species.

Good on you, Jo, for thinking and planning ahead (something the big zoos don't always do!)

Which brings me to a question; will ARAZPA member zoos trade animals with non-ARAZPA zoos? Anybody?

This has ramifications not only for your cappies but for the future of species such as hippos etc.

I'll take this one ;)

ARAZPA Zoos can trade with non ARAZPA zoos and private individuals, although i believe there is a long paper trail,
Humbug Scrub (private sanc in SA) is getting some Northern Quolls off SWW (arazpa member).
I believe if there are ASMP species it is discouraged. but dont hold me too that.

just on a technicality, isnt SWW withdrawn from ARAZPA?
zoos do frequently trade with private holders and non-ARAZPA member zoos and parks, particularly with aves and herpes, and this happens with both exotic and native species.
but as Ben pointed its not ideal with ASMP species for a range of reasons including unknown pedigree etc.

couldnt make it alone? or needed to cover their commercial underbelly with a 'serious commitment to conservation'?

The answer is yes, the degree to which they will do this depends on the internal policy of the zoo, not on ARAZPA policy. Some are reluctant to deal with private people, others are much more open. The general protocol is that animals are firstly offered to ARAZPA zoos, then to others. Although I know one major zoo that restricts its dealings in one group of animals (macaws) entirely to private breeders. The reason is that that is where the captive population is.

ASMP species are a different kettle of fish, and ASMP committee approval is required to move program animals outside the program. Program animals have to be returned to the program if the zoo leaves ARAZPA, and this has generally been honoured, even by liquidators, who usually hold onto every asset they can. So in effect program animals are "owned" by the program, not by the individual zoo.

Thanks for that zoopro.
But i didn't make myself very clear about what i meant. What i did mean was could you import these animals if you got all the right permits and did it all right.

And two more to add to the list are
Okapis
Aardvarks

Thank you

I'm sure I heard some time ago (possibly at a primate TAG meeting) that all the black-caps in the region are descended from a small number imported into NZ. As the black-caps have only relatively recently been elevated to 'priority' cebid now there has been some more interest as to where they came from. You might be able to source stock from US/Europe, but the caps are either of poorly-known origin or are currently part of an established breeding programs such as yellow-bellys.

Damn, I suspected that the NZ caps where the source of ours. I have emailed the C.apella TAG conveyor, she is away but I am hoping she can fill me in a bit more on the current status. I have lost the folder with all my old TAG newsletters (WAAAH) in a uni computer clean up, so can't check back on them.
