After the body blow of losing the appeal for the sale of land, to raise funds for the proposed masterplan for Edinburgh zoo, the royal zoological society of Scotland is bouncing back with proposals for an Amazon themed complex, based on the river Clyde in Glasgow.
This complex, will be inspired by the Burgers zoo in Holland, where thematic, climate controlled exhibits for rainforest and desert species are shown to the public.
An exact location is not known (by me), and species mentioned include manatee, sloths, jaguar and primates.
The proposed budget is £35 million pounds with the zoological society looking for funding from various sources.

This project has been in the melting pot for a few years now, and now will come to the forefront after the rejection of the masterplan funding option, the society has always stated it would want a presence in the west coast, especially since the closing of the Glasgow zoo.
This chance for a major collection in Glasgow has to be grasped, there is a timeline for completion to coincide with the commonwealth games coming to Glasgow in 2014.

Ambitious Plans For 35m Rainforest Zoo Beside The Clyde (from The Herald )

Moving forward, directors of the RZSS are now sitting on the council of Zoological society of Glasgow & West of Scotland, with the aim of maximising the sale value of the land at Calder park (the former site of the Glasgow zoo), with the aim of using said funds to create a zoological attraction in Glasgow, which may or may not be the above stated Imuya attraction.

If this all goes ahead, it would be interesting if RZSS could get Amazonian Manatees, as opposed to the usual West Indian.
Hoatzin is another species I would love to see in an exhibit such as this.

Having previously mentioned this exact issue somewhere on this site, stating the same. The council of ZSGWS with members such as Roger Edwards and the like, with those members being from the professions of retired dentists, retired teachers etc. None may I say have ever held any notion of managment or positions of acumen. I once wrote for the press stating that the zoo council were more akin to tea and biscuits than doing any real work, and that the zoological council were so in-ward thinking that it stiffled the potential of any expansion. As the land that is owned by the ZSGWS can not be put into their own pockets, the monies from any sale must be held in trust. With Miller homes encroaching onto the land itself and former land. Would if the land could not be sold to an outside body, would the zoo council sell it onto Miller Homes? or will the zoo council still hold out and continue with their silly backward thinking games? Who knows....but its time that the old ZSGWS took a step back and let those with greater wealth of experience run the show.
