If you like lemurs, ring-tailed lemurs in particular, and Madagascar then perhaps you knew of the work of Alison Jolly. She was a scientist and conservationist who did very important work on lemur social systems.

She discovered that ring-tailed lemurs have a matriarchal society, a revolutionary discovery in anthropology. She also did very important work in conservation by working with the government of Madagascar to protect habitats.

She died in February 2014 at age 76, having left the world a better place.

Jolly's mouse lemur (Microcebus jollyae) was named for her in 2006 :)

Thanks for posting the picture of her mouse lemur, TLD. It's a very fitting reminder of her contributions to science and conservation of lemurs.

What a shame. One of the giants in primatology.

A long list of achievements in primatology and expert on the lemurs of Madagascar. Her legacy will ring on, we have sadly lost another of the biological sciences great scientists.

The Jolly's mouse lemur was of course honoring and befitting tribute of her many scientific discoveries and achievements. She has indeed left Madagascar and the wider community a better place.
