Volume 27 Issue 4 - Edition 166 - June/July 1980 - physical copy

Editorial (Nigel Sitwell) - opinion piece discussing the need for management of captive populations when space is limited, genetic lines are overrepresented, or inbreeding depression is likely, and the three options available; prevention of breeding, culling at birth or in the egg, or culling later in life.
Saving Europe's Herpetofauna (John Coborn) - a general summary of the talks and presentations which took place at the 1980 European Herpetological Symposium held at Cotswold Wildlife Park; these focused on the captive and in-situ conservation of European native reptiles and amphibians.
New Enclosures at Cologne Zoo (Ernst Kullmann) - an article written by the director of Zoo Köln, discussing the recent construction of a lemur house, and the need to adapt it for larger species such as black-and-white guereza due to delays in the construction of a house for large primates; this required the construction of larger cages connected to the main body of the house via bridges which extended over the visitor footpath.
New Zoo for Tripoli (Peter Ferguson) - an article discussing plans for a new zoological and botanical garden to be constructed in the city centre of Tripoli, Libya, with concept drawings and models showing some of the planned layout and design.

Indonesian Parrots Need Zoo's Help (Roland Wirth) - article on the conservation threats facing many of the parrot taxa native to the Moluccas and Lesser Sundas, giving information relating to particular examples and arguing that zoological collections need to establish breeding programmes for these taxa and others.

The California Alligator Farm closed only 2 years after that, interestingly. Most of their alligators went to Florida, not sure where their successfully bred spider monkey troop went.

Nearly all of those have actually remained SSPs to this day, although Indian Python as one of the earliest reptiles is interesting. Thanks!

Even more surprising is the fact that the list mention 5 reptile species and only 4 bird-species ! The focus of animal-collections were at those days ( and are still today ) mainly on mammals and birds.

Book Reviews: reviews of Management of Prosimians And New World Primates, a collection of eight papers presented at the 8th symposium of the Association of British Wild Animal Keepers and written by a variety of zoo professionals active at the time of publication, and The Last Great Auk by Allan Eckert.
The Rhinoceros in Asia (Andrew Laurie): a 9-page article originally published in Bongo 7/1983 and written by a professional Biodiversity Conservation Adviser based at the University of Cambridge, Department of Zoology; it provides a general overview of the prehistoric presence of rhinoceros taxa throughout Europe, before going into detail about the historic range, wild behaviour and diet, conservation status and present-day range of the three extant species of Asian rhinoceros.
Spontaneous Use of Sticks as Tools by Gorillas at Howletts Zoo Park, England (Richard J. Wood): a research paper written by the head keeper of primates at Howletts Zoo, discussing behavioural observations made at the collection over the course of five years, demonstrating that several Western Lowland Gorilla at the collection had spontaneously learned to use sticks at tools - contrary to received knowledge that such behaviour was unknown in the species, unlike chimpanzees. The paper is supplemented by a pair of figures; a table showing the composition of the Howletts gorilla group on 21 July 1982 noting age, wildborn or captive-born status, and sex; and a plan of the gorilla and chimpanzee complex at the collection.

Keeping Dolphins Healthy (and Happy) at Brookfield Zoo, USA (Janis Ott-Joslin): an article written by the Veterinarian-in-Charge at Brookfield Zoo discussing the routine physical health checkups and veterinary care which the dolphins at the collection were subjected to, along with the training regime which was put in place to assist keepers and veterinary staff in these duties.

Preventing inbreeding in captive populations: American black bears in captivity (Hans-Jürgen Schröder) - an article submitted by a former employee of Bear Country USA, a wildlife park in South Dakota, USA holding approximately seventy American Black Bear, discussing the observed population characteristics and dynamics, and means by which inbreeding depression can be prevented.

Letters - a pair of letters responding to the article Development of Bat Population in Israel in IZN 196; one from J. Dam threatens Wildlife Sanctuary (Peter Bunyard) - notes on a recent visit to the Thung Yai Wildlife Sanctuary and Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary on the border between Thailand and Cambodia, and the imminent threat posed to both by plans to construct a dam which would flood an area spanning 630 square kilometres; the article also contains discussion of the various critically-endangered species located within the area, both present and already-extirpated, and pre-existing conservation threats.

A Mealworm Dispenser For Meerkats (David Shepherdson, Tracy Brownback and Anne James) - a paper written by three keepers at London Zoo, and originally published by the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare as part of a series of Environmental Enrichment Reports, discussing the design, testing and production of a cheap and simple device for dispensing a supply of mealworms throughout the day to a captive group of meerkats; the paper contains information on the materials and methods used, initial behavioural observations, and preliminary results. This information is supplemented by figures showing the design of the dispenser, and the average length of time various behaviours were observed within the group when mealworms were available and unavailable. A more detailed report is cited within the endnote references, and was published within International Zoo Yearbook 28.

A Zoo Management Course In China (Mark Rosenthal): a detailed review of a three-week zoo management and education course which the author (a curator at Lincoln Park Zoo) took part in as one of four zoo professionals selected to teach principles of modern zoo management to 31 directors, assistant directors, senior staff and personnel belonging to the Chinese Zoo Association, representing a total of 19 zoos throughout China. The review discusses the experiences of the author in China, the various subjects covered over the course of the three weeks, and the importance of courses such as this one.
A Fish Rescue and Breeding Centre at the Horniman Museum (Gordon McGregor Reid): a short article written by a keeper at the Horniman Museum - and later director of Chester Zoo - on the establishment of a facility established at the museum with the aim of maintaining and breeding several species of cichlid endemic to Lake Victoria, some of which were believed to be extinct in the wild, dispersing these to other zoological collections and private breeding facilities, and undertaking education programmes to promote cichlid conservation.
"An Ape In A Bear Costume" - Belle Isle Zoo's Versatile Spectacled Bear (Ken Kawata): a detailed five-page article discussing the experiences of the author (a noted keeper, zoo director and zoo historian active at several zoological collections, including Belle Isle Zoo, across a 46-year career prior to his retirement in 2005) after the import of a male spectacled bear in 1988, which displayed a range of atypically "intelligent" behaviours more commonly observed in great apes; the article contains a large amount of information about the design and dimensions of the bear enclosure complex, the supplementary structures and facilities found within, and enrichment methods employed by the keeping staff in an attempt to moderate the activities of the animal in question.

This is really interesting. I haven't read this piece, but I dug up a 2011 AZA white paper outlining the organization's stance on breeding white tigers. Their position is essentially outlined by this quote:

... in terms of effective conservation management and population health,
selective breeding for specific phenotypes is in direct opposition to standard zoo
population management goals of maximizing genetic diversity by minimizing inbreeding.
Recessive alleles (or any particular alleles) should neither be selected against nor
selected for, since doing so would lead to a loss of overall genetic diversity (Lacy, 2000).

Explained further, what this means is that white tigers should not be purposely bred with each other to perpetuate the phenotype, nor should white tigers necessarily be excluded from the gene pool because of their phenotype - although from what I know it's a very rare allele and I don't know how many captive tigers fit the bill of "white phenotype, not inbred, pure subspecies" - if there even are any.

Also worth noting (in case people reading this weren't aware) that the inbreeding of white tigers has had demonstrated negative health effects on the animals, aside from the fact that artificial selection for rare phenotypes based on "awe factor" is not in line with modern scientific or conservation practices. Though I'm not sure how apparent this was in 1990.
