Indian Rhino AI

I have just a couple of questions.

The Montgomery Zoo's facebook paged announced that they would be featured on the Today Show tomorrow morning, June 22. So I looked it up on the channel guide and the description says "an Indian Rhino conceived by artificial insemination."

So my questions are:

Has this been accomplished before, anywhere? I seem to recall AI being done with this species elsewhere.

I think the specimen at Montgomery is a male, meaning that the pregnant female is somewhere else..? :D

The Cincinnati Zoo successfully impregnated one of their female Indian Rhinoceros using sperm from a male at Bronx. While the calf was born successfully, it ended up dying shortly afterwards. So far that's the most success that's been made when it comes to AI with this species.

No way. Both male Himal and female Jeta are at the some establishment (Montgomery Zoo). Jeta has resided there long term and bull Himal arrived in 2008. This is their first calf .. as a pair (allthough Jeta conceived / raised offspring before at Montgomery).

He's referring to Nikki at the Cincinnati Zoo. In October 2010 she gave birth but the calf died 12 hours later.

OK, the calf that was (died).

One of their 2 females on the trials was later on sent to Yulee White Oak and now has a calf by natural breeding!!!
