Good news for Indian Rhinos, the latest census (2009) has found the population in the Kaziranga National Park at 2048 up by 193 from the last census in 2006, 90% of the worlds population live in this park.

India's "Vision 2020" is working to increase the species number to 3000 by that year.

Great news to hear, I have heard many interesting things about India's 2020 vision.

Awesome news, the Indian rhino is an amazing animal. Great to hear that the numbers are up.

I reserve judgement untill the time I really have laid my eyes on the evidence. I find too much at fault with the numbers poached in Kaziranga over the last 10-15 years. Too many deaths have been attributed to other causes but poaching, where this may have had to be implicated. The number of deaths is actually staggering and looking at the overall percentage growth in rhino populations .... :(

Besides, unhealthy political aspirations do sometimes get in at the helm of nature conservation in India due to its federalist system that is precluding concerted effective national action planning. This has not helped the effective policing of Kaziranga, nor an adequate and decisive translocation and intra-federal states' conservation policy within India and across international borders with Nepal and Bhutan.

There is no reason to trust a Indian Goverment statistic.

2006 population 1855

Lets assume 50% female

928 females

life span 30-40 years
sexually mature at 5 years
gestation period 16months
Interval between births 3 years

Its really not very likely that there has been 65 succesfull births per year.
Far more likely the Indian goverment wants to look like they are being responsible for there enviroment!
