Indian rhino in Europe

He was born in 2015 at Tierpark Hellabrunn. Since 2017, he lived in DierenPark Amersfoort. And in 2022, he moved to Basel.
Puri, is a genetically fairly important individual as he is the single surviving offspring from a wild born cow from Nepal. This particular cow Rapti was wild born in Nepal and arrived in 1990 to form a pairing with bull Nikolaus (the Stuttgart/Basel lines of old). Unfortunately, the zoo encountered multiple reproductive issues with her from the earl years.

She had a record of a stillbirth (2004) and only retried in 2012 (a malformed calf that only lived 3 days...). Her only surviving offspring was a male calf named Puri and born in August 2015. He was born under a somewhat natural cycling regime and normal birth (probably reproductively managed beforehand and during pregnancy).

Puri is currently the new breeding male at Basel Zoo (and being the sole 1/2 Nepal-wild born representation from female Rapti).

I can imagine Basel wanted to acquire this genetically important male, particularly given their long association(including the first breeding) with Indian rhino, being the SB holders etc. ( I remember the previous bull 'Jaffna' when he was a Whipsnade Zoo for a while.)

Zoo Berlin's Instagram Stories showed today that the 35-year-old Indian rhino female Jhansi has moved. The zoo has not yet announced where she went.

A new rhino will be arriving to replace her. Tzoo has not yet announced who that will be either. However, it has been mentioned on the Dutch zoo forum Laafsekikkers that the 8-year-old female Karuna will soon be moving from Diergaarde Blijdorp to Zoo Berlin. This is mentioned on a poster at her enclosure.

38-year-old Indian rhino female Narayani moved from Eindhoven Zoo to Diergaarde Blijdorp this week. Eindhoven Zoo is expecting 9-year-old male Qabid from Edinburgh Zoo to arrive soon.
