Parky(born Whipsnade) and Esther(born London) only produced Emma. They failed to produce anymore calves together.

However, Esther had a 2nd female calf many years later with Quinto- I think its called Manyara and this is the 2nd female of the trio in the Tsavo area.

Parky was sent to Port Lympne, where he has one daughter. He was later sent somewhere in Europe. So Esther and Parky each have one other offspring(female) in UK but not together..

From memory, Chester Black Rhinos have been as follows;

1950/60's. m Roger(born Bristol)
f. Susie(wild caught.

They produced 3 calves. m. Reginald(sent to Moscow) m. Jasper. (sent to Paignton, and much later to Port Lympne, but he never bred- infertile?)
f. Linda(died before adult)

After this pair died they got Esther & Parky, who produced Emma.
Later, they added a 2nd pair- Quinto & Pangani. They produced female Kitani. Quinto later sent to Whipsnade for about 10 years, now back at Chester.
They also had 2 bulls from Port Lymne- KataKata & Baringo 2 to try and breed with Esther and Pangani- but no success. KataKata later sent to FRance.
Rosie came from Londson, hasn't bred at all.

The six calves born at Chester were;
3 from Roger and Susie. 1(Emma) from Esther x Parky.
1(Kitani) from Quinto x Pangani 1(Manyara?) from Quinto x Esther
 
At Whipsnade, Quinto was kept with Emma, who had been sent there previously. Her first partner there was KataKata(from PL ) but no breeding happened.. So KataKata was sent to Chester in exchange for the proven Quinto.. but Quinto and Emma never bred either. After Emma died, they got a new female Saya, from Berlin(?) as a mate for Quinto- but she died quite quickly. Quinto was then the last black rhino at Whipsnade till he was returned to Chester.

Parky was born at Whipsnade. He is the ONLY offspring of a male called Rupert who was born at Hanover. Others born at Whipsnade were sired by a different male- Bwana Mkumwa(who was Rosie's father also)

Esther was born at London Zoo, to their first pair w/c pair Paul and June.

Rosie was born at London but her parents were the ex Whipsnade w/c pair Bwana Mkumba and Mama Kidogo who were later sent to London Zoo.(confused?) They finally went on to Port Lympne and both died there.

They are long gone... Roger died 1980. Susie in 1975.
Unfortunately their three offspring didn't breed either so that line didn't go anywhere. However Roger had a brother at Dublin zoo who fathered one calf (Ringo/Baringo)which became Howlett's first breeding male and that line is still going strong.
 
again thank you youtube, thought this would be of interest, showing the Indian rhino exhibit at Nagoya zoo japan, wait for near the end to see the most lethal moat in animal keeping history

sure is!

is it just me or is the idea of filling in moats not something that sounds particularly difficult or expensive? makes you wonder why, when they are known for being such a hazard, so many zoos continue to leave them installed.
 
I've seen the Indian rhinos in Delhi zoo- the enclosure is probably no better or worse than in other Indian zoos- basic but adequate.

Worse is Gauhati Zoo in Assam, being the nearest zoo to Kaziranga Sanctuary they always have a number of rhinos- I saw about nine- in very cramped and mucky surroundings standing around in slurry-like mud.

Does anyone know whats going on with Australasian breeding programme? I understand they had hopes to form a breeding group of 2.2 but currently only have 1.0. With a exhibit at Western Plains recently upgraded and ready for breeding...

The poor guy has been on his own for a while at Western Plains, Taronga had a 4 year old female "Kua", But shes unfortunatly passed away after intestinal blockage, fighting illness for 13 days. Further disasppointment to the programme was the autopsy which found she was pregnant, something which had never been seen in a animal this young...

I believe both were imported from Sandiego Wild Animal Park? Anyone know whats next?
 
I remember that the female rhino was part of a three zoo trade with the Los Angeles Zoo, San Diego WAP and Taronga zoo. Taronga got the rhino from SDWAP, LA got two female koalas from Taronga and I forgot what SDWAP received.
