The Uttarakhand State Wildlife Board has cleared a proposal by the Wildlife Institute of India to reintroduce the Indian rhinoceros to Corbett National Park. Initially, ten rhinoceros will be moved from Assam and/or West Bengal, with another ten planned to be added at a later date.

The site is considered to have suitable habitat, is well-guarded against poachers and conflict with the local people may be limited by the natural geography, with Corbett bound on three sides by mountain ranges and reservoirs.

The rhinos are also being reintroduced for their ecological role - their grazing reduces the height of elephant grass and creates new feeding areas for spotted deer, sambar, hog deer and swamp deer.
