ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Indian Rhinos at Whipsnade.

They intend to hold 2.2 adults

Thats interesting, i would of thought most zoo would like to hold a few females as they will most of the time happly share an enclosure and breeding male.

I hope chester hold a couple of females, as it will look fantastic in their exhibit, but then am not sure there indoor housing has room for many, does anyone no how many stalls pens are in their house?

I believe from what i`ve seen of the inside of the exhibit they can hold 3 at most so that would make it a pair plus youngster.

Thanks for that, it would be nice to see the enclosure with 3 or more rhino's in, maybe they could move the spotted dear and build an extension the house to hold more.

Newz ............!!!

On November 5, 2007 a healthy male calf was born to female Beluki. The news has been kept from the press to allow the pair to bond and the youngster to overcome the first critical weeks.

Beluki was first expected to give birth some time early in 2008, but she has beaten the keepers to the post yet! :)

When is Jaffna going back to Basel? He is needed for breeding soonish .... Any indication when the vet blockade will be loosened in the UK?

It should be lifted now but with this country any thing is possible

A young male Indian rhino Hugo is travelling from Warszawa to Whipsnade.

Thanx Jana!

When is Jaffna returning to Basel? Has he already been transferred or is the import of Hugo somehow connected to sending Jaffna reciprocally back to his legal holder within the Indian rhino EEP?

Jelle- I thought you confirmed several weeks ago from looking on Basel Zoo's website that Baatchi was going to Chester and Jaffna returning to Basel on the same transport(21st February onwards) I'm presuming 'Jaffna' returned to Basel on the lorry/crate return trip?

Though Whipsnade don't need 'Hugo' yet I suppose its no harm for them to take him soon, though I'm not sure if there is space in the 'Rhinos of Nepal' new indoor house for another animal- maybe he will live in the old quarters....(unless Roopa has not been moved to the new house)

1. I have not had any confirmation from Basel that Jaffna is back there yet. A week or so ago both cows were still in the new bull holding pen ..... So, there is your explanation! He is due shortly though as he will be put back with the cows this year to have 2010 calves.

2. Hugo is probably out here for the future. Both cows have now 1-year old cows. In 3 years time both will be ready to be introduced back to a bull and by then they do not need to resort to importing Jaffna once more. Hugo is genetically important in that he is the son of an wildborn Assamese bull. His dam was a Basel born cow whose parents were both close to being founders (the sire was a wildborn x the dam a captive born of wildborn parents).

Anybody been to Whipsnade in the last few weeks?

I'd be surprised if he wasn't collected by the crate/lorry which took Baatchi to Chester on its return trip to Europe. That was the obvious time.

So Hugo's grandparents on his mother's side were Arjun x Moola?

What are his parents names? (forgive if already listed elsewhere..)

Now I want to know if Jaffna is still at Whipsnade. I really thought he had left...but maybe not yet. I guess 'Hugo' might just as well come to Whipsnade earlier than he will actually be needed, so they can get to know him...

Hugo is born on 7 december 2005 Rotterdam Zoo.
His parents are Nico and Namaste.
Nico is born in Planckendael Zoo (parents are Yassam + Zutuma)
Namate is born in Stuttgart Zoo (Parents are Puri + Nanda)

Zutuma is born in Basel Zoo in 1971.

1. Spot on!

2. YassamxZutuma.

I misinterpreted your question. 2. is meant to cover the parentage of the bull at Antwerpen/Planckendael and demonstrating why Hugo's genes are so important to the population.

Hugo is born off NicoxNamaste at Rotterdam (as blackstar noted).

To me this indicates 'Hugo' is mainly descended from Basel founders (3 grandparents of the Basel line), apart from the w/c grandfather 'Yassam'.

True, however he is not inbred as he is close to the F1 generation and even half F2 generation.
