Indianapolis Zoo Indianapolis Zoo News 2024

Another interesting thing to note from that article is that it states the zoo has 21 chimps! I wonder where all these new chimpanzees came from? Last I knew, they had 6.

One site says the 21 chimpanzees range in age from 12-58 years if that helps. North Carolina Zoo and Los Angeles Zoo appear to be best placed to spare surplus females, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the new chimpanzees came from more than one zoo unless someone had a total phase out.

A map of the new chimpanzee complex can be found here:

There's no shortage of chimpanzees that are in labs throughout the US...

has anyone visited the zoo recently that has any information on the walruses? i planned on returning to the zoo soon and i wanted to see them. last time i visited was in july of 2023 and the exhibit was under construction, is it still under construction? the zoo map was updated recently and has walruses on them but on their website animal list there aren’t any walruses.

The zoo does have 21 Chimps, volunteers, interns, and workers get a list of them so they can ID them to the public; the sex ratio is 8.13

No they aren’t there.
- Eagles are back and the golden eagle can actually fly pretty well.
- Chimp exhibits are alright but nothing special, just a few day rooms. I’ll upload pictures soon.

Thanks for you update.

Previously Indianapolis Zoo maintained only 2.4 chimpanzees (MM: Noah, Ben and FF: Lucy, Lela (Leal), Sue and Mara.

I wonder where their extra 6.9 chimpanzees came in from?

Indianapolis Zoo has really embraced the non-natural look in its brand-new Chimpanzee complex, complete with old-fashioned cement and metal indoor dayrooms. There's even a set of stairs for some chimps to ride their skateboards down. :p

@Spike

Judging from the Orangutan Spaceship/Church exhibit, Indy Zoo will stick to mainly non-natural building materials for the Chimpanzees far into the future. And yet, so many zoos around the world have incorporated a layer of mulch or some kind of other natural substrate in all areas of an indoor area for great apes. Having a soft floor is best for ape joints, scatter feeds, warmth, etc., and there are many reasons why zoos have gone with that modern approach. Here are 5 examples of zoos I've visited with a soft layer of natural substrate for chimps within an indoor space:

Oregon Zoo (USA):

Dierenrijk Animal Kingdom (Netherlands):

The indoor area for chimps at Osnabruck Zoo (Germany) is insanely impressive:

@twilighter

As for the outdoor 'Oil Derrick' approach at Indy Zoo, it's a valid point whether that giant metal climbing frame will be boiling hot in the summer and then freezing cold in the winter. Will the chimps strike it rich with oil?

If Indy Zoo ever decides to get Gorillas, then there is a toy G.I. Joe military base from the 1980s that would be perfect as a template for a future exhibit. ;)

I like the orang spaceship’s main exhibit well enough. Genuine climbing opportunities, perches, there’s always some bedding. The satellite exhibits are undeniably bad. And at least the mega church is inspired by Indonesian architecture. I will defend it (except the satellites).

I have not been to Indy yet. I’m in town this weekend but don’t think I can find time to stop by. I do not think I will be able to defend the chimpanzee complex. Especially with the number of chimps they have. Wish they’d merged the bear grotto / former sloth area / dog show for a really good primate complex instead of this. If they’d expanded out to the lemurs and aviary it might’ve been big enough for a really good chimp complex and a better outdoor area for the orangs accessible by the overhead lines.

Alas, no.
