India's Wild Tiger Population Is Up

Maybe it is just due to the fact that they have done much more thorough surveying than earlier..... But well that does not make such a "success story".

Still this is only 2% of the total number of tigers that has been....
 
I'd be inclined to suspect that this is merely a case of the 2014 census having a higher level of accuracy, and that the 2010 census represented an underestimate of the true figure. As such the population may have remained more or less stable, or even dropped, whilst still showing this apparent improvement.

That thousands of tigers, leopards, lions, elephants, rhinos etc can still persist in a nation of 1.25 billion people is amazing.
