It is even more sad, that many such birds (like sunbirds, tailorbirds and prinias) die soon in cages. There is also a need to educate even people who buy birds, to switch to other species.

Are all these birds destined for the Indonesian market? I mean, they would be hard to export without papers you’d think? Or are they destined to be smuggled out?

Because if they are destined for the Indonesian market, why are so many people in Indonesia so interested in keeping rare parrots and parakeets when many species would be quite common?

Pretty much because those birds is exotic and its cool to keep them (For those bird lovers), just like how some Indonesian teens started keeping snakes, civets, predator fish, or even bird of prey, because they look cool. Richer Indonesians mostly keep them for hobby or to build their own mini zoo, although most of the time they acquired the birds from certified breeders.

What bird of prey species are usually kept by these teens? And are they used for hunting of prey or are they just in a cage or tethered? And how common is this hobby? Do they get them mostly from breeders or from wild nature/traders?

Owls, like the buffy fish owl and barn owl, sometimes smaller accipitriformes, mostly the black-winged kite and changeable hawk-eagle. Most that I see were tethered, but scops owl were keep in a cage. There is a owl keeping community in Indonesia (Mostly consisted of actual professionals), openly keeping a accipitriformes without licenses will resulted in you going to jail. They're mostly wild caught, especially those in a traditional bird markets, there are also several breeders that sells baby owls.

The langurs will probably go to Malang for rehabilitation and release, the birds ..., frequent trade with the eastern islands means lories, parrots and cockatoo frequently end up in large numbers n the bird dead. place. Must check these out.
