Chester Zoo Is Elephant 'Birma' pregnant?

In the UK, Bornean Orangs considerably outnumber Sumatrans. The only Sumatran Orangs currently in the Uk are at Chester and Jersey plus 0.1(Djambe) at Colchester and 1.0 (Aris) currently at Monkeyworld.

However, Colchester have applied for an additional pair of Sumatrans for their new Orangutan house to open next year, and Bristol also propose keeping Sumatran Orangs in their new environmental zoopark- when its built.

To return to the original subject ;
Is there any news update on whether they think elephant Birma is pregnant?

Faecal samples show that Birma is almost certainly not pregnant. It is hoped that Upali will mate with Jangoli next year, and possibly Sithami too.

mmm. thats a pity but you never know, it might still happen in due course.
It would be good if Jangoli could produce a female calf- it would be the start her own subgroup in the herd, as they eventually send the male calves away...

Thank you very much Bongorob. Do you know why Upali is never in the big paddock together with the herd? It`s certainly not ideal to keep a male in such a small paddock permanently. There are so many zoos who keep the bulls with the females during the day.

That is good to hear, but I am still interested why he isn`t mixed with the female herd. Is he having problems with the older, more dominant females?

He does go out with the females in the morning as one big group, but generally tends to ignore them unless they're in season, therefore he keeps to himself until he is seperated again.

He wasn't in the main paddock at anytime during my visit a few weeks back(and I was there quite early) But why do they seperate him so much if it isn't necessary?

Birma.

I've heard that someone had posted on another thread that 'Birma' is/may now be pregnant. Can anyone confirm or refute that?

hmm... quite odd. The date arrived isn't filled in correctly which leads me to question it...

The elephant.se site also published the ramaan story two years late, causing quite a stir on these forums...

Chester havn't got room for two bulls! So i very much doubt it!

Interesting thou, as chester have no need for another bull

Usually, the website is well coverred but in the case of Maurice I am afraid this is a serious case of oversight. Maurice to my knowledge is yet at Sevilla de las Guardas. The only "move" candidate from Sevilla de las Guardas is Maxim (first to to go to Kolmarden, now unclear).

I heard that Plock bull Thisiam was going to Kolmarden, Maurice came to Chester apparently because of he was always bullied by his fellow elephants Aung Si and Aung Bo keepers tried to introduce him to the older males but the two older Emmen bulls Maung Htoo and Tjse Pyan shrunged him off and also Maxim wasn't either.
