Yancheng Safari Park in Changzhou, China.

The zoo said it was a young chimpanzee, but some people thought it looks like a bonobo.

with the black face and pink lips it certainly looks very much like a bonobo.

Yeah definitely looks like a bonobo. Are they serious regarding the dress....

I think it is a hybrid. The face certainly looks like a bonobo, feet and limbs are too strong for a young Bonobo.

It's interesting if it is a bonobo. I had assumed they had bred this individual from their adult chimps (I visited back in October), but maybe he come from elsewhere.

If you don't like this picture, wait until you see one of him balancing on a Hippo.

What did you think of the zoo DF? With a change of management it could be made very good overnight, but currently there are some really glaring problems.

:o Sorry FG, I didn't visit this zoo myself, the second picture was from my friend. According to the photos and description from my friends, this zoo focused more on entertainment and amusement, not conservation or education. what's worse, the zoo has financial difficulties and the boss has run off……

So far never heared of a Chimp / Bonobo hybrid. For me it looks like a young Bonobo.

Nor have I, though that doesn't mean its impossible of course. I would say its a Bonobo though I agree with Bjoern the limbs looker stouter than normal, particularly for what looks like a young animal. The head is possibly a little less flat than normal too.

I'm going for common chimp, because the limbs and body look like a normal chimp, and I've seen young chimps that look like bonobos in the face before (one at Taronga - I think it was Kamili).

:p

The face screams bonobo to me, the body is quite stocky but you can get stocky bonobos sometimes. It's not unheard of.
I have seen hybrids before so this could possibly be a hyrbid if the zoo itself doesn't know the difference between chimps and bonobos (annoyingly). However the face is too obviously bonobo to be a hybrid I think.

The pictures themselves are upsetting whatever the species is.

Where did you see the hybrids, would be very intresting to know !

Hmm. Did you check out the page where this author argues that gorillas are crosses between chimpanzees and giant forest hogs? :p

And the claim that they made a strong case for the chimpanzee x pig hybrid origin of Homo sapiens.

The baby in those photos look like it could just have a deformity, but I wouldn't be surprised if there have been hybrids that just weren't recorded and probably didn't live that long anyway. In countries where wild chimps or bonobos live near to humans especially, because of the proximity. And some morbidly curious, sexually frustrated human.

The chimp/pig thing is the most preposterous model for human evolution ever concieved, if humans and chimps have a hard time creating hybrids then a chimp and a pig are MOST CERTAINLY going to have a lot of trouble.

Im going with a common chimp baby that looks like a bonobo. If it is a pure bonobo, im amazed that there are some in China due to the rarity of the species.

then a chimp and a pig are MOST CERTAINLY going to have a lot of trouble.

Especially as chimps don't possess a corkscrew.

Actually, taking a closer look at those two photos, I'm not entirely convinced they are of the same animal.
