Is our Snowleopard extinct on Zoochat?

Good to know that Dan is getting better and will be back hopefully soon. I don't really agree with him much but his presence really spices up the site! :D

I hardly ever agreed with him, but he is a very thoughtful and intelligent poster, whose arguments are always well made and thought-provoking, and tinged with wit and humility. I like him - or his cyber-version - a lot. I'm sorry to hear he has been ill, but very glad to hear that he is on the mend. I'm looking forward to reading more of his calls for all zoo enclosures to be ridiculously large!

Thanks for the kind words, guys! And I hope that snowleopard´s absence is only temporary.

I think snowlepoard will be back, he could be busy with something in his life right now and can't get on. I know that I can only get on once a week at the moment, somtimes less. As for this photo scandal, I don't know what happened but Ill say this, We fall down so we get right back up and kick the as* of what ever pushed us done.

Thank you everyone for the many "welcome backs" on various threads, and it is all a little embarrassing for me to be singled out in such a fashion. I'm thrilled to be back in a thriving zoo community, and it was nice to stay in contact with a few folks during the months that I did not participate on this site. I'm no longer a ZooChat supporter (for years I contributed the $25 annual fee to help this site) but I would willingly pay it again if it meant bolstering the purged photo gallery.

I've uploaded many photos from two zoos that had barely any representation in the gallery (El Paso and Utah's Hogle Zoo) and I might still upload more photos in the future. I still have all my fingers and toes crossed that one day Sim will wake up from his hibernation and put some effort into this wonderful site that he had the goodwill to create. Some of the galleries that had a few hundred photos now have just a handful, and that is an immense shame to one and all. I would love to have all of the deleted photos reinstalled on this site, and if there was a way to obtain extra holding space then maybe each individual gallery could be capped at a certain number of photos. Perhaps if ZooChatters paid a small token fee annually ($5 or less) then that would easily cover the cost of extra computer storage space.

$5 is nothing; I think each and everyone of us spends that and more each time we visit a zoo; even if we have a membership and thus get in for 'free', instead it goes into fuel, snacks, etc.

I paided this year and most likely will renew my membership, even if I have not used any of the member features apart from increased message space. Still haven't decided though, depends on this and that, including what Snowleopard mentioned.

This is the only forum we zoo lovers have, operated in English at least. German-speaking Europe has several, but the difference between them and Zoochat is that even amateurs such as myself can enjoy themselves here, while I think you need a PhD in Biology/Zoology to manage on the advanced level of discussions that take place on the German-speaking forums. There are several Conservation forums too, but their topic is no doubt mostly in-situ conservation while we are mostly into ex-situ conservation (i.e. preservation of animals in zoos, not in the wild)

Here are some questions for SIM:

1) How many of the 3834 members are paying to support the site?

2) How many would it take in addition to the present figure to rejuvenate the site?

3) $25 may seem a lot to students, but those who have a job spend most likely this amount every day on something they don't need or even want without even noticing it. I have been both. We might have a student and full-paying membership, say 25% off for students? If you are a student and reading this, would it encourage you to contribute to our community?

I would gladly pay towards the up keep of this site if there was more storage for the photographs
Could someone do me a favour and translate the value of $25 into sterling please (I may be a bit thick)
And yes its great to have Snowleopard back

According to my calculations (using my bank's currency calculator) USD 25 is at the present time GBP 16.21.

I'd be a bit wary about making this a site where you have to pay for membership. Of course, there are many that do pay, however a good handful of users are still in school and are much younger than some of us. With no bank account, how would these members pay, or would they just get kicked off unless they have parents that would be willing (and I'm sure there are parents that wouldn't pay just to let their children use a website). Just my opinion anyway :)

I think it depends on what we are paying for. If it is an existential issue - ie the site could only survive if a subscription fee were introduced - I would pay. But if it's to fund a photo archive I wouldn't as I believe the pictures are here to facilitate discussion and the sharing of zoo news and developments rather than forming a comprehensive and authoritative archive.

I certainly wouldn't pay if it was for photo storage, since it won't even let me upload photos anymore. I always get an error that the file is too big, even though I've posted bigger files in the past without a problem.
