Is this a record?

Two days ago myself,my girlfriend and her 9-year old daughter had to pay a whopping £81 for the three of us to enter Flamingo Land! Is this a UK record for three people [including one child]?

What you need to remember here is that you are paying for admission for the zoo AND the theme park rides. So really you are getting pretty good value IMO.

below are prices for theme parks only.

Alton Towers - £85.50
Camelot - £66
Thorpe Park - £87.60 (Booked Online)

So in comparison you can see Flamingo land is much cheaper.

Only in England could someone say that £27.50 for a child is "much cheaper",we wanted to see the zoo not travel upside down at 100 m.p.h.!It is a problem for those zoos [three of which started as zoos] that are now theme parks but it does not excuse the fact that these zoos[or aquarium at Alton Towers] are outrageously expensive.

Can I just ask did the person in the ticket kiosk steal the money out of your wallet or did you hand it over? It really annoys me when people complain about things like this. You did not have to go! If you just wanted to go and see the zoo then you should have gone to a zoo not a zoo-theme park.

At the risk of turning this into a can-cant-can personal argument and as someone who has wrote a book on British zoos[as well as writing a newsletter]-i am interested to know if any zoo is more expensive for two adults and a child to enter..not if it is worth it or not, or whether other non-zoological attractions are comparable.

Tim, at a guess i would say that is the highest you would pay in the U.K. Now u have highlighted the high cost that cut,s myself out from paying a visit there when, i up in Yorkshire next week. Ihave not been to F.L.Z.P.In about 13 yrs just after my oldest daughter was born, and then it was a lot cheaper, and included the theme park.

I'm sorry but you can't compare a zoo to a zoo-theme park. The £81 was not for a zoo.

It is like comparing the price of a portion of chips to a portion of fish and chips.

Would make more sense if zoo-theme parks had different prices, with seperate entrances,i am sure more zoo folk would then visit these collections, thus adding to there yearly income.

Well, lets put it another way, last year the owners of Flamingo Land assured me that a number of qualified-to -judge people thought their zoo to be one of the best in the country.Ive been visiting irregularly for 42 years[a fair customer by any token]so i thought i would see what i thought[i didnt concur with that opinion when i wrote my book].The point im making is that for any zoochatter to see this highly touted zoo is going to cost a lot..and no price break for a single child is almost venal.Perhaps they are offering a winter zoo price as they have done on occasion in the past. But i will return to my point- can any zoo beat the price?

I agree with you 100% on that fact, although separate entrances would probably not work because the majority of zoo-theme parks have the rides and animal exhibits mixed amongst each other. I think a wristband system would be useful so that people who have paid for the rides and zoo are given a wristband and these are checked by the ride supervisors. Have you written a letter to the park with your thoughts and suggestions?

I did Chessington a few yrs ago, still awaiting a reply ! Only go to Yorkshire to visit family, and so have not suggested the idea to F.L.Z.P.

I have just sent Flamingo land an email with my wristband idea and explaining that many people would just like to visit the zoo and are not prepared to pay for a theme park as well. Obviously 1 email from me is not going to make any difference but if a lots of zoo chatters get on board then they may pay attention.

Well we are right to make our feelings known, of course i was totally prepared for the entry price but i thought that no single child price was unfair to be honest..and if Flamingo Land were mine the zoo would be free-and subsidised by the funfair, which would have the added advantage of dismantling that awful watersplash ride over the top of the Lion House[and which was dripping right into it on Thursday].

But what about the people who are interested in the rides and not the animals? should they be offered a discount?

To be honest its a miracle the zoo is there at all..because there was virtually no interest in it from what i could see.99% of people were there for the rides.I wouldnt worry about them if i were you Johnny.

If it was possible to do that then yes they should but unfortunately the layout of these kind of attractions would make this nearly impossible. It is possible to stop people getting on a ride but quite hard to stop people looking at a lion or walking past a giraffe.

I'm not worried about them. Just looking at it from the parks point of view. I personally don't like these mixed attractions and doubt i'd ever visit them.

It sounds like an appaling place.

Chessington (2 adults and child offer) price on the door would have been £84 (though £68.40 if you book on-line more than five days in advance).
