Curraghs Wildlife Park Isle of Man's wallabies

There's a thriving colony in the Derbyshire peak district, if they can survivethe winters there then these are hardy creatures indeed!

Speaking to people i know in the area that they are found in the peak district, most of them think they have more or less died out now in the area.

That's a real shame I really thought they were doing well there. I hope they manage to reestablish themselves. I might have to go on a wallaby hunt ( non lethal kind) next summer.

Am I right in thinking there are introduced wallabies on one of the small islands off the Scotland coast?

Think you might be getting mixed up with the island they live on inside Loch Lomond in Scotland.

Very well could be, I just remember hearing somewhere that there was some on a Scottish island, and assumed it was off the coast, forgot about that island :).

The wallabies were first introduced to the island in the first half of the last century by Fiona Bryde Colquhoun, or Lady Arran, sister of Sir Ivan Colquhoun, once the fastest woman on water, having broken her last power boat record at the age of 62. A wooden bungalow was used by her as a holiday home and the wallabies were part of a private collection.

The wallabies are destroying vegetation on Inchconnachan Island and leaving many native plants and creatures - such as the rare capercaillie grouse - under threat. They are one of the factors as they can eat young tree saplings and this influences the regeneration of the woodlands.

Luss Estates were planning to rid it of the wallabies.
