Wildheart Animal Sanctuary Isle of Wight Zoo News

Interesting.

I’m assuming the individual in question is probably Mcluvin, a very old and geriatric male. Likely a move akin to what Monkey World did with the elderly ring-tailed lemur George and Patas Monkey Mica.

Is the park really down to just two tigers now? What about Natasha and Zoppa?

Natasha and Zoppa are both still present. The two tigers referred to by @Embu are the two new arrivals who (I was informed yesterday) should have arrived today. The two groups will not be sharing.

To conserve and protect White-clawed Crayfish, a new conservation centre has been established at the Sanctuary. This will house the first ex-situ population of native Crayfish on the Isle of Wight, with the aim to not only supplement existing wild populations, but to establish new populations which can be released into safe sites.

Does anybody know whereabouts in the zoo the new crayfish centre can be found - is it within the Education Centre or does it have a building of its own?

Announced in the last hour

Have you heard the news? We've just announced our latest rescue mission on Isle of Wight Radio, and it's one of our most ambitious projects to date!

The Sanctuary is planning to rescue two European Brown Bears called Benji and Balu, who have spent their lives in a cage on the side of a restaurant in Azerbaijan.

We need to build a 3,500 metre square habitat for them which will include woodland, pools, and caves - everything Benji and Balu have never been able to experience.

This is a huge task, but we believe with the help of our community here on the Isle of Wight and beyond, we can make this dream a reality and save Benji and Balu!

Find out more about this project on our website:

With the ongoing fundraising for the rescue bears, does anyone know the last time there were bears on the IOW zoo?

Total amount raised so far for the bears is £125,000 just another £25,000 to hit their target.
Progress appears to doing well so fingers crossed they can bring the bears over by the end of the year.

Meet Dakota and Sakari, our Striped Skunk sisters!

Striped Skunks are native to North America, but they are increasingly being kept as exotic pets in Europe and the UK. This can lead to poor animal welfare, as was the case with Dakota and Sakari, who were confiscated from a private owner.

We were delighted to offer Dakota and Sakari a forever home with us, and they have been settling in well since their arrival last month! You can find them in their newly refurbished habitat next door to Otoo the racoon.

Beggers belief that people keep these as pets imo

Some sad news

RIP Tafkap | 2019-2024

We are devastated to announce that Tafkap, one of our charismatic serval brothers, has sadly passed away suddenly this week due to an unexpected congenital disorder.

Tafkap and his brother Xirus arrived at our Sanctuary in 2021, after suffering a rough start to life as victims of the illegal pet trade. The brothers started their rehabilitation with our rescue partners at AAP before we were able to offer them a forever home.

Servals are a naturally solitary species, but as brothers Tafkap and Xirus were able to share one habitat. We will be monitoring Xirus over the coming weeks to see how he adapts to living on his own, and may consider rescuing another serval as a companion for him if that’s the right thing to do for Xirus.

Help us name our latest rescues!

We're thrilled to be giving a forever home to a male and female raccoon dog, also known by their Japanese name, tanuki. They are currently in quarantine away from public viewing, but we are hoping to move them into their new habitat inside the Sanctuary by the end of September.

Before our raccoon dogs move in to their new home, we need YOUR help to name them! Our Animal Team have come up with a shortlist of names, and you can vote for your favourites by following the link below.

Vote here ➡️ Help us name our latest rescues!

️ The pair of names that receive the most votes will be selected, and those that have chosen the winning names will be entered into a raffle to win a family pass to our Sanctuary including an exclusive viewing of our raccoon dogs in their new home!

Doesn't say where they've come from so unsure if they're former pets
