San Diego Zoo Ituri Forest/Monkey Trails questions

Pretty much any habitat type goes for what I was talking about, just at the moment I'm working on an African Rainforest. I said "unique mammal mixes" because I'm aware of giraffe/zebra/ostrich or antelope/crane mixes, I'm just looking for different ones.

The third primate species in that exhibit is DeBrazza's Guenon. I was a little surprised that there was nothing mixed with the Colobus Monkeys at the Bronx. Has anyone heard of mixed exhibits with these guys?

Cincinnati used to mix Colobus monkeys with aardwolves in both Gorilla World and the Jungle Trails African building.

Bronx did not mix because Colobus exhibit was an afterthought, not very large, and it's difficult enough keeping it green with just the colobus, let alone with anything additional. So the mesh was designed for colobus and there was no real digging barrier.

Cincinnati originally put aardwolves in with colobus in gorilla area because they had no place else to stick the wolves and it was a secure space.

I visited San Diego Zoo last week, the mammal mixed species exhibits for these two complexes were:

Ituri Forest:
Larger enclosure had Western forest hog, red river hog, forest buffalo, and Allens swamp monkey.
Smaller enclosure also had Allens swamp monkey, and Schmidts spot-nosed guenon and African spot-necked otter.

MonkeyTrails and Forest Tales:
Eastern Angolan colobus and black mangabey.
Mandrill, colobus, and Schmidts spot-nosed guenon.
Wolf's guenon and pygmy hippopotamus.

Other mammal mixed species exhibits at the zoo:

Absolutely Apes:
Orangutan and siamang.

Urban Jungle (former Elephant Mesa):
Giraffe and Soemmerings gazelle.

Outback (near koalas):
Red ruffed lemur and rock hyrax.

Kopje:
Klipspringer, rock hyrax, and dwarf mongoose (I did not see mongoose but the sign is certainly still there).

Polar Rim (former Horn and Hoof Mesa section that was not demolished for Elephant Odyssey):
Lesser kudu, Cavendishs dik-dik, red-flanked duiker, Spekes gazelle.
Gerenuk and more Cavendishs dik-dik.
Steenbok and more red-flanked duiker.

Elephant Odyssey:
Bairds tapir, guanaco, and capybara.
Dromedary camel, alpaca, horse, burro. (Domestics in a yard with occasional supervised contact area).

Thanks for the update... a couple of questions.

The red ruffed lemurs and rock hyrax... are they in the exhibit that most recently held colobus but at one point held Francois langurs to the north of the Koala gift shop? If not, where are they?

Also, do they have clouded leopards back on exhibit anywhere, is there exhibit still occupied by spot-nosed guenons?

I've seen recent photos of black duikers at the zoo, any idea where they are exhibited?

Thanks.

No, the lemurs and hyrax are across from that in an older smaller exhibit with a cage sandwiched between two open yards. The exhibit you are thinking of was blocked off and I presume empty.

No clouded leopards, their old exhibit is still the guenons.

I did not see any black duikers.

Wow, it sounds like the exhibit you are describing is the old flying-fox exhibit which is kind of surprising because I didn't think it would be big enough for lemurs and hyrax.

Yes that is the one, the former flying fox exhibit. I think there were just two lemurs and one hyrax, the hyrax might be one that doe not get along with the others in Kopje or the Childrens Zoo, or is an extra male or something like that. The zoo has several exhibits with species that are also exhibited elsewhere in the zoo, which is nice to see if space allows. For example, there are three seperate exhibits for meerkats, three for hyrax, three for Cavendishs dik-dik.

I think I remember hearing that one clouded leopard is being exhibit in one of the small cages in Elephant Mesa. I think that clouded leopard is used in "Backstage Pass".

I've been going to the Zoo for awhile for Zoo Intern Quest program, its a good program.
There are two hyraxes in that exhibit now.
The Indian Rhinos have moved to the old Elephant exhibit, there are two. The old Tapir exhibit now has one Red River Hog. The area that they had over there for a sort of bar is used for an Arctic Wolf that is an animal ambassador in the Back Stage Pass activity. The old rhino exhibit's moat has been filled in with substrate and the right side is for Caribbean flamingos, the center for two red kangaroos, and the left for some miniature ponies/horses. These are all for the Backstage pass thing.
