Bristol Zoo (Closed) IZES Event

Yeah, I can often be found on that border between brave and stupid/silly.

Besides, if I can carry myself around I'm sure I can manage an arm, now where can I find three other volunteers/idiots.........
Better change that to 2 volunteers Shorts,as you can count me in always game for a moment of stupidity!!

I'll be there on Sunday. The zoo took delivery of their new book: 'An illustrated History of Bristol Zoo Gardens' on Tuesday. As I helped to write and research it, I'm interested to see what others think about it.

Just wanted to say what a thoroughly good day it was yesterday - many thanks to Tim Brown and co for organising and to everyone at Bristol, particularly John Partridge, and Don Packham for talking us through the 1948 video (the year he started at the zoo) with astonishing recall.

@Designaka - the book is superb - I cannot recommend it to everyone highly enough. Love all the aerial photos and maps from each era.

Only disappointment of the day was that robmv escaped his birthday bumps! Still, there's always next year! :D

I would just like to add my thanks as well for a brilliant day. It was lovely to meet some of you for the first time (and hopefully not the last!) The tour and film footage/talk were fascinating, and I couldn't put the book down once I was back home :D

I'll probably get told off for putting this link http://bit.ly/gRqgQI but I'm not sure why helping people who love zoos to get hold of a book by other people who obviously love zoos is so wrong!!! So here goes: 'An Illustrated History of Bristol Zoo Gardens' is available from yesterday (March 7th) on the Bristol Zoo website and in the shop. http://bit.ly/gRqgQI

I also had a brilliant day on Sunday and would like to thank all who organised it . Good to meet more zoo-chatters . I would certainly recommend the book , very informative and well produced , I consider it to be a real bargain .

Fascinating to hear Don Packham's memories of zoo-keeping over 50 years ago , very long hours and virtually no pay to start .

Does anybody know when and where the next event will take place (or when the information will be announced)? I aim to be at the next one, but it all depends if I know where it is quick enough to arrange travel and accomodation if it is a good distance away - plus save for these things and spending money :D

Indeed, if only more books in a similar style were produced. Here's hoping it's a financial success for all involved and IZES approach, and get cooperation/permission from, other zoos nearing milestone anniversaries to produce similar books (I'm dreaming Twycross 50 here).

Indeed.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned here yet was that the IZES were able to present £2000 (think I've remembered that right!) to the Amphibian Ark project at Bristol Zoo from the surplus generated by the society from, among other things, sales of previous publications (such as the IZES Guide to British Zoos and Aquariums and the wonderful zoo postcard book We Went to the Zoo). So more IZES books are a good thing on many levels!
