On February 14th, 2023, the zoo announced the gender (1.0) and name, Mathan (He was formerly known as Spare Bear).

On February 15th, it was reported that the zoo was cited by the USDA in October 2022 for having only 5 out of 10 animal keepers staffed, with a deadline to correct the problem by February 1st, 2023.

On March 9th, it was reported, among other things, that 23 animals passed away in 2022, including (0.0.2) red river hogs, (0.0.3) red-ruffed lemurs, and a (0.0.1) red wolf. It was also reported that (0.0.3) American flamingos were killed in a 2022 predation event, as well as (0.0.4) black-necked swans went missing (most likely from the same predators).

Not exactly news, but the zoo confirmed for me that the grotto below was actually not vacant between 2012 and 2023. For a time it held the red panda after they moved it from the large habitat. I am not sure why they moved it, but it explains why a front had been added. This is the grotto between the Asiatic black bear and the now vacant giraffe yard. The zoo posted a picture as recently as June 2019, so it would seem the animal passed away sometime after that, likely when the zoo was closed due to covid. At least it means the space has not been vacant as long as it seemed.

Wow, this is terrible news. From what I've seen of the zoo based purely on YouTube videos, it seems like such a great zoo too. Their Range of the Jaguar and Tiger exhibits in particular look astounding, and the zoo has proven quite innovative in its exhibit design. Not to mention their recently released YouTube video announcing their plans for a massive immersive manatee exhibit. I'm guessing they'll have to scrap their new manatee exhibit, though I don't know what else the zoo can do right now to boost attendance and revenue. :(

The zoo you are referring to is Jacksonville Zoo from Florida. This is Jackson Zoo in Mississippi and it has been deteriorating for years.

Sorry, I was in the midst of commenting on my error, then realize it'd be better to delete my comment since it contributed nothing to the thread before I saw your response.
 
It is very saddening to read that they may shut the zoo down. But honestly the council makes good points. They funded $1.8M and the zoo has only taken in $50K. The city is in dire straights as it is and just does not have the resources to keep the zoo open. Unless they can get funding from another source - it seems this zoo won't be with us much longer.

With out knowing the type of monkey or the circumstance it is premature to judge too harshly. Bites happen, unfortunately. I've been at zoos where bites happened from monkeys, apes and lemurs - the general public just does not know about it.

I don't think they have any of those any longer, some of the places they were at are back to nature, such as the old lion tailed macaque and red panda yards near the African area. The only one that they may have is the wolves, but I am pretty confident they are gone. The Asiatic black bears are where the orangutans were.

Of note is the single sable, zebra and two klipspringers. They share a large yard with a pair of ostrich, making a very empty exhibit.
 
According to a Facebook post they are removing some parts of the zoo that are not used. Currently they are tearing down a "walk through aviary" that is not being used. I don't remember anything like that from when I was there, maybe it is the old lorikeet aviary? Do you happen to remember, @snowleopard ?

I have no idea, as there's not a photo of any kind of walk-through aviary in the ZooChat gallery. I looked at the 2012 map, but the zoo has numbered lists of animals on it with no mention of the word 'aviary'. Even the 2000 map doesn't mention that word, so perhaps it is the 'Discovery Zoo Lorikeet Exhibit' like you mentioned. Either way, this zoo seems headed towards closure unless there's a miracle influx of funding.

Yeah....it does not look good. Their website is down too, I have no clue when it stopped working but at least the last couple of days.
 
"It’s unclear what bird exhibit is being repaired. " LOL, they were ALL in need or major repair. They claimed it was a "summer storm" that damaged them, but they were pretty much falling apart in March last year.
