Zoo Moving Forward with Improvements
Upgrades planned for 2012
Thanks to support from the State and City of Jackson, visitors will see
many new improvements to the Zoo this year!
A new restroom facility will replace the old, a 'Splash Pad' will be added
at the front of the zoo for children to cool down in the hotter
months, educational displays will be added to the Gertrude C. Ford
Education Hall, and upgrades to many of our animal exhibits will begin
including work to the Hippo pond, Tapir renovation and Gibbon and
Amur leopard enhancements.

From the zoos facebook page
"There is a great deal of animal transfers happening at the Zoo; including our Red Wolf. Our current male is heading to Chattanooga to be matched up with a female. This will leave the exhibit here empty for awhile, but never fear - a breeding pair is coming to our zoo soon!"

QUOTE]

I visited Jackson Zoo (the only AZA-accredited institution in Mississippi) last year and the surrounding neighbourhood is rundown and notorious for criminal elements. Unfortunately the zoo's annual attendance has declined for 5 consecutive years and the area around the zoo is not helping matters. While most major facilities have seen an uptick in visitors Jackson Zoo only receives about 120,000 fans per year.

It is the exact opposite. Jackson's Dumplin moves to Columbus and a Pittsburgh female (who I believed to be Kimberly) moved to Jackson.

Sorry TigerValley. I was just using Facebook as a means of finding out zoo events that have happened since jusko posted about the red wolves, and must have gotten mixed up about the orangutans.:o

*New Additions*
*Springbok Calf
*Pai, a 1 year old female Red Panda
*Red River Hog
*Orion, Phoenix, and Aries, three male Red-Ruffed Lemur babies

I just saw this article and looked a photos of the zoo in the gallery. For animals to be relocated I hope the orangs, other apes, and monkeys get another home!
