On January 2nd, the zoo announced they are planning on planting 246 trees representing 13 species (12 native, 1 non-native Florida-friendly) in their newly renovated parking lot. All of the trees will be planted by February.

On January 22nd, the zoo announced that a (1.0) prehensile-tailed porcupine named Peter Quill was born on November 7th.

On June 1st, the zoo announced a new experience opened called Colossal Creatures, which includes animal sculptures, realistic animal sounds, themed games and activities, and food.

On April 25th, the zoo announced that a (0.0.1) Magellanic penguin was born.

On June 15th, the zoo announced the penguin's gender (1.0) and name, Chesterfield. They also announced their penguin exhibit is under construction and will reopen in autumn 2022.

On July 7th, the zoo announced that their (0.1) West African mamba named Iris has passed away due to age-related issues. She was 25 years old which made her the oldest of her species in any AZA facility.

On July 28th, it was announced that a (0.0.1) bonobo named Laney was transferred to the Memphis Zoo in Tennessee.

On August 5th, the zoo announced they have released a (1.0) Florida manatee named Inigo back into the wild after he was rescued in late 2021.

0.1 Grevy’s Zebra named Zalika was recently transferred to the zoo from DAK and has been introduced to an 8 year old female named Makena. The girls will soon be introduced to the zoo’s 22-year old stallion, Mosi, for breeding in the near future.

Matthew was the third in that litter, with Sriacha and Michael. Not sure of their present status.

Through the zoo’s Instagram account, they have recently announced that “Steve”, the zoo’s only cheetah, had unfortunately passed away last week after his health began to deteriorate for the worst; Which has now left the zoo with one less species of large cat.

Not that I am aware of, I’m afraid. But I do hope that at least, something can be done about it, not unlike the former okapi habitat.

Although it might be somewhat repetitive of seeing a species, like these ibises, being displayed in more than just one location within the zoo. I suppose that one can suspect this recent change as being a temporary move; that is, if the zoo could find a potential holder to move the birds to.

Maybe they can get one from Busch Gardens. They seems to have quite a few.

Miller says right now, the zoo can properly care for up to five manatees at a time. "We'll be able to handle at least probably three times that number with the new facility.”

Miller says ideally they'd like to break ground sometime in 2023 and finish up within a year and a half.

The manatee river will be the first and last stop at the zoo, becoming the new entrance and exit.
