Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens Jacksonville Zoo News

The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens are getting Penguins and Shark,
Go to the Jacksonville Zoo official Site and go to events to see more details

On SEPTEMBER 19 2009 (Elephant Appreciation Day) zoo staff informed us the 3 cows,Sheena Chana and Moki were no longer breeding capable. WOULD THAT SPELL OUT BAD NEWS FOR ALI, THE AFRICAN BULL?

What I'm sad that the females can't breed anymore, but Ali would have artifical insemintion to help the gene pool like what he did with his first born at the Indianapolis Zoo

As far as breeding, Ali is an active participant in the SSP's artificial insemination program. Now, if the SSP wanted Ali to be sent off somewhere (remember, when he was brought to the zoo Jax was one of the few in NA that had the facilities to handle a full grown bull) then that may happen as well.

Can you state the ages of the cows?
Did any of these have any offspring?

I just recently visit the zoo and the zoo is switching their river otter exhibit at the Play Park with penguins D:

Oh, they're getting rid of the otters? I had hoped they were fitting the Penguins in a new exhibit. That is actually kind of disappointing as that was a very nice river otter exhibit.

I like the otter exhibit in the play park, I just hope that they are not going to that cramped exhibit next to the bobcat's exhibit.

I just got the Member Magnazine Today, and here is the News:
Okapis are switching with the Cape Buffalo
Speke's Gazelle will be at the Giraffe Exhibit in the near future
The Female Gorillas will be occasionally with Quito on exhibit on February
The Penguin species that the zoo is getting is Magellanic Penguin and the opening date member is Feb 27-28 and public Grand Opening is March 6-7

EDIT: The Cape Buffalos are going to a instituation in California and the otters are going to a zoo in New York

The zoo had aquire okapis and eight Magellanic Penguin. The okapis' exhibit was the cape buffaloes, but now it has more trees and grass. The penguins exhibit was the otters old exhibit in the Playpark, here the land has been replace with some dry grass, trees, and pebbles as the floor. The penguins were very active animals, but all swam together. The exhibit also had a meshing room to make sure no animals are able to get in the exhibit again. Also, I had seen the female gorillas and Quito mix together in the same exhibit yesterday. All the gorillas had kept their distance from each other though, Quito was at the window closer to the Play Park. One female gorilla was at the other window, and the last gorilla was at the back of the exhibit laying down.

UPDATE: On facebook, the zoo had said that the okapi would be scheduled to be on exhibit on Thursday.
