Auckland Zoo Jade the Otter

So ive just heard that there is a possibility that one of Auckland Zoo's female otters in the main group of 4 (or 5 i cant remember), Jade, has passed away, possibly as recently as today.
Jade, mother of the others in her group plus mother to Jana, mother of the two young boys in the rainforest exibit so therefore a grandmother.

Jade is a very sweet otter and while caring for her and her family a couple of weeks ago each individual seemed fine.

I was just wondering if anyone could confirm this at all. I am hoping it is just a rumour but if anyone could confirm either way it would be appreciated.

Thanks JTC

I hope it's a rumour, Jade's awesome. She was born in 1999 and has four daughters at the zoo (three with her) and one, Jana, in the rainforest with Juno and her two sons. Her fifth daughter, Jin, left the zoo a few years back following her escape. I couldn't find any news articles about her death so fingers crossed it was just a rumour.

About Jade the otter

Hi JTC,
We are sad to report that Jade, one of the otters at Auckland Zoo, has died, and we thank you for your concern.

Jade, who was well over middle-aged, was the mother of 12 offspring (6 males and 6 females!) and grandmother of two; her daughter Jana (who resides in the rainforest with Juno) gave birth last May to males Kanan and Banyu. She contributed greatly to the Australasian region’s population of Asian small-clawed otters, with her bloodline very well represented.

In late June, Jade was diagnosed and treated for a very bad chest infection. (Keepers noticed that she was not her usual self and immediately contacted the vets). She was examined, with the usual x-rays, bloods, etc, being taken, and was put onto antibiotics and pain relief, and monitored carefully after being put back with her family. She regained her normal habits as she appeared to respond well to this treatment until she was seen with breathing difficulties late on a Friday afternoon.

Despite emergency care, involving intravenous antibiotics and fluids, and the draining of a considerable amount of infected fluid from her chest over the following three days, she unfortunately died four nights later. This condition, called pyothorax, is also seen occasionally in domestic cats and dogs. One of the problems in treating this disease in an otter, is the inability to maintain indwelling drains in a relatively active zoo animal over the several days required to offer a reasonable chance of successful treatment.

The Zoo now has three of Jade's daughters in the exhibit next to the tiger exhibit, and four otters in the rainforest, and that includes her other daughter Jana - a lovely legacy.

Oh damn. I was really really hoping I had it wrong this time! At least, as stated, Jade is well represented by her offspring and theirs. What a loss for the group. Thank you Jane for that, I appreciate the story though a sad one.
Well at least she isnt suffering anymore. Hope the rest of the girls are ok and are coping with the loss of their mother without too much stress.
RIP Jade <3
