Hi

Does anyone know what Jaguars are currently at Chester and whether there are plans to breed them?

Thanks

they have breeding pair, sofia (F) and salvador (M). They have breed twice to my knowledge with the cubs not surving. THese are located in the savannah section of the jaguar house.

The rainforest side they have 2 males and one femle. the black male on his own usually indoors and is the father to the other other male. The son and his mother are in the outdoor enclosure usually and the son has had an op to stop him breeding with his mother. Sorry cant remember names. They all came from marwell i believe, well some were down south and are surplus animals at the moment due to being over rep in the captivwe gene pool.

Yes, the other three Jaguars are from Marwell - they were moved up to Chester because the old jag enclosure at Marwell was, well, showing its age. Chester at the time had just lost the elderly pair who were originally in the rainforest side (Ebony and Carlos) and so was, I expect, quite glad to be able to fill up the house again in one fell swoop.

Any information on subspecies of jaguar kept?

It would help if zoos maintain purebred subspecies and not indulge in breeding subspecific hybrids (as has happened with lions, tigers, pumas and sundry).

Perhaps, zoos could coop with some S.American collections to target a particular subspecies from the S.American realm ..........
