Marwell Wildlife Jaguars

Marwell previously held Persian leopards , the Amur leopards relaced them .

Cheetah male

As far as I know the new male and older female are in the 'bowl' - but I haven't visited for a while so don't know if that is still the case

In fact, during the transition period Marwell held both Persian AND Amur Leopards.

The Amurs were moved into the enclosure when it was redeveloped and the older Persians were moved over to the old Lion Enclosure (which was covered for the purpose).

After the escape (and eventual death) of one of the Amurs on introduction to the new enclosure, a Persian Leopard was moved back to that area (separated from the Amur) until a replacement Amur was brought in. For a sure time, therefore, the two sub-species could be seen in adjacent enclosures.

When the last Persian died, the Lion enclosure was re-developed for Giant Anteater (and is now (or will be) the new amphibian area).

There are some pictures of the Amur Leopards on my Gallery under Marwell.

As well as the loss of the female escaping from the top of the enclosure , a cub managed to get through to the male's side of the enclosure and was killed .

yep, knew that poor thing! the enclosure must have been a very bad design

Even the best designed enclosures can have problems, that the designer did not forsee because animals seem to have a knack of surprising us at times, with what they can do or how small a gap they can fit through.

I always think the area in which the jaguars used to inhabit would make a good hunting dog exhibit; Marwell has wanted to keep these again at some point with more successfull breeding programmes, and I imagine the tree cover and slope would suit these well. Not to mention they could chase the train from behind the fence. :)

I think the best design for a hunting dogs' enclosure is long and narrow- giving them ability to run some distance in a straight line. I doubt they'd be interested in the train though, more likely the ungulates...

Cheetahs get that too; I've seen them stalking the dama gazelle more than a few times.

yes i got a seen a photo of that on flickr, and i think african dogs would be more suited near the bat eared fox area

Now we're talking!!! Hunting Dogs would be a brilliant addition to Marwell, they're doing well in other UK collections and they make a great exhibit. I agree about the long enclosure though, so I don't think the old Jaguar area would be suitable. Any ideas on what could go there anybody? I'll start the ball rolling and suggest Clouded Leopards! :D

ermm, the bad thing is that it is such a small area, maybe bring back the jaguars or lions?

or how about another primate cage like gibbons or macaques

or maybe a animal thats lives on slopes: goral, japenese macaques (?)

Bat-Eared fox area will become part of the Congo biome, so they'd be near Into Africa.

But I'm thinking of not just the old jaguar enclosure, but the long stretch of grass behind it being included too; suprised no one thought of that. Goral, if they kept them again, would likely be near Roof of the World.

I was taking that into account- they could have a long narrow enclosure stretching the whole length of that side of the Oryx/zebra paddock- just widening out to take in the area of the old Jaguar enclosure.

they have already built a bbq near that area, i dont know if it is permanent though :S

the persian leopard enclosure was next to the old gibbon enclosure. It now exhibits 3 giant eggs of elephant birds

I would also like them to exhibit C O C K of the rock in the south american biome
will the sitatunga stay in there currant enclosure.
a bit off topic, have marwell bred there babarusa

- Actually, you're thinking of the former Snow Leopard enclosure. Persian Leopards used to be in the area of the current amur leopard enclosure, and finally in the old lion enclosure until Sita died in 2005.
- Umm...
- Sitatunga are currently in what will become the boreal forest biome, so they'd probably move to the eventual West African Wetland biome which will be centered around the current hippo house, or moved to another collection entirely.
- Babirusa have bred back in 1992 not long after they arrived. There is a breeding pair at Marwell who arrived a year or two back, with hopes to gain more piglets from these two. :)
