Jakarta Aquarium

Is it true that the city, and outer suburbs of Jakarta, is now home to THREE aquariums? There's Jakarta Aquarium and Ancol SeaWorld, plus the brand-new BXSea Aquarium. It appears that this trio of aquariums are all within a 45-minute radius of each other. I suppose that the enormous population is more than enough to sustain three aquariums and several zoos as well.

You forgot Dunia Air Tawar in East Jakarta, but yeah now Jakarta has four aquarias

I actually suspect that they've phased it out already, seeing as it seems to have not appeared in any of the promotional materials or in recent visitor videos. It's likely that it was sent to Solo Safari, though unfortunately I can't confirm this anytime soon.

Turns out the capybaras got a new exhibit near the freshwater tanks (AFAIK) and the serval is there to stay... :(

honestly, this is a terrible idea. i don't know why jaq decided to acquire capybaras, jaq is located at a mall and it's not suitable to house capybaras. i hope the capybaras soon got phased-out even though it's impossible.

JAQS just celebrated Holy the Harbor Seal's birthday on June 24th, informing that the seal is currently 9 years old

Since Holy pretty much came from Taman Safari Bogor, I wonder if they have another individual or even a group in Cisarua.

The park in Prigen display a pair, while Cisarua as far as I'm aware have an seal exhibit that have limited access for guests (They have to first exit from the sea lion show stage to view this exhibit)

It appears that Jakarta Aquarium have acquire a new pair of younger capybaras. The original individual from Cisarua might either be off-display, passed away, or sent back to its original home in the Safari park.

Judging by the age of the capybaras, I presumed these were acquired from private suppliers instead from Cisarua as capybaras this young are available in Indonesian trade for private keepers and zoos to bought.

Holy the Seal is apparently leaving JAQS soon, after her last show. No explanation has been given yet regarding her departure or where she will go after leaving Jakarta Aquarium. She has been on display for 8 months since late February this year.

I wonder what will become of her old exhibit? Will it be repurposed for sea turtles?

Thankfully I already saw Holy a bit during my trip to Central Park last month. Hopefully she'll be moved to Bali Marine Park.

There's a possibility that Holy has a medical issue that needs to be taken care of offsite (could be, given how abrupt her departure was). If it's not enclosure-related, we could see another Harbor Seal being transferred to JAQS, but I do hope you're right and another more suitable aquatic animal be housed in her old enclosure.

What a great news! I hope Holy's exhibit got demolished and got converted into a deep-sea zone to house deep-sea animals such as king crabs, halibuts, isopods, etc. I also hope the capybaras would got phased-out as soon as possible.

I kinda wished Holy's exhibit to be repurposed for sea turtles

I uploaded almost 60 photos of this aquarium into the gallery and in reality it's part zoo/part aquarium as here are the 9 mammal species I saw in August:

Serval
Tufted Capuchin
Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur
Small-clawed Otter
Binturong
Meerkat
Capybara
Prevost’s Squirrel
Harbour Seal

An green sea turtle named Shelly has been displayed at the main tank after previously housing an lone hawksbill sea turtle. This is not the first time they had displayed a green sea turtle, as an individual named Donatello has been previously displayed in 2019 (Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) - ZooChat).

Reportedly, some sea turtles have been permanently kept at Jakarta Aquarium and are unable to be released back into the wild due to health issues. Shelly and the single hawksbill sea turtle might two of them.

Since this month, Holly's exhibit has been occupied by a lone South American Fur Seal. I did had a peek from the gift shop during my time at Neo Soho today, but because it's still in its habitation period, I could not take any pictures of it.

A staff there told me that Holy has been sent to Cisarua, though AFAIK the seal exhibit currently houses the lone Steller Sea Lion that was given from a Japanese zoo since the 2000s. I'm personally hoping for her to be sent to Prigen afterwards, where she would join the resident spotted seals there while a part of me wanted the "swim with dolphins" pool in Cisarua to be converted into a new exhibit for the Steller Sea Lion, with its old exhibit housing oriental darters or if they can, horned puffins or Inca terns.

There is likely a rotating system between displaying the seals and the Steller sea lions in Cisarua. Holly and the other seal might be off-display by now.

spotted seals
The seals at Prigen are also harbor seals (These seals are sent from Taman Safari Bogor, being originated from rescues in France), there's no spotted seals kept in Indonesia.

If so, could Holy also came from France as well along with Cisarua's batch?

Obviously yes, I presumed that these seals wasn't came separately (Assuming that TSI hasn't breed them yet). Atleast Holly specifically was reported to be sent from a rescue in France.

I think I'll prefer to wait for a proper announcement from them.

The animal reported does look like a pinniped. Thus, this is a very selfish move by JAQ that they still want to continue keeping pinniped there (Holly's departure was also attributed to unsuitable living conditions, I don't think the new pinniped would be all that different).

Renzo, the South American Fur Seal is now on display in Holy's old enclosure, as with @Rizz Carlton , I also think this is a poor decision on the aquarium's part, but I can only hope Renzo adjusts to his new habitat.

If things go (forgive me for this) South, hopefully it sends a clear message to JAQS

Renzo looks cool! I saw a glance of him from the gift shop during my time at Neo Soho last month when I went there because of Pokémon Festival 2024. I hope Renzo stays longer there than Holly. Though if it didn't go as planned, I hope they'll send Renzo to Bali Marine Safari and convert the exhibit into an exhibit for sea turtles.
