Jane Goodall Passed Away Today

To say I'm devastated is an understatement. Dr. Jane Goodall was my biggest hero growing up, and one of the biggest inspirations for me to actually pursue zoology as a career. I had the honor of seeing her live at one of her talks in Sioux City this March, and was is such a brilliant, intelligent, and compassionate soul. Not only was she a groundbreaker for women in STEM, but inspired millions to have an appreciation and passion for our planet and natural world. It's not often you have to mourn a figure that truly made the world a better place. Rest in power, doctor.

Taronga Zoo have announced flags at both their zoos will be flying at half mast today in honour of Dr. Goodall, as tributes from around the world continue to flow.

Dr. Goodall always had great praise for Taronga Zoo’s chimpanzee exhibit, with their 21 chimpanzees (from six families) functioning as close to a wild community as you could expect in captivity.

Taronga Zoo previously joined Jane Goodall in a partnership to expand the Tchimpounga Rehabilitation Centre; and the zoo itself has been the site for numerous behavioural studies within a captive setting - some conducted with comparative data sets collated in Gombe.

The world lost a hero today.

How fitting is it that she passed doing what she loved - still travelling the world educating people about the importance of protecting the natural world. Her passion shone through her work, and she was a beautiful soul that has taught generations and will continue to teach generations to come through her legacy.

It's sad to see such a wealth of knowledge pass away, although I'm very proud I got to grow up immersed in the world of conservation and therefore had the opportunity to learn a lot about Jane and her venture's in the 60's which were thrilling, fascinating and inspired my love for chimps and great apes. Jane Goodall was nothing less than an inspiration for me as a person. A true conservation icon.

Jane changed the world - revolutionising our understanding of animals and evolution. Her absence will be strongly felt worldwide, but she's left a forever lasting legacy. I can't wait to teach my children and grandchildren about her.

I'll finish with one of my favourite quotes of hers:

You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

Rest in peace Jane.

A heartbreaking devastation, and a tremendous soul lost.

I didn't grow up knowing about her, only learning about her actions and ideals when I got into wildlife conservation. But ever since I've held her in the utmost respect, and she's been a major inspiration for me in pursuing conservation and zoology in general.

May she rest in peace and may her legacy pave a path forward towards a world more in line with her teachings.

Rest in peace Dr Jane Goodall you absolute legend. You will be very very missed, and thank you for everything you did in your amazing life. Sad day. Great tributes and knowledge sharing about her and her work everyone.

*should be a chimpanzee rather than a gorilla there

'''' Sir David (Attenborough), 99, who was friends with Dame Jane - said in a statement: “Jane Goodall was the first to prove that an investigating scientist and a great ape living in the wild could become true friends and in doing so she came to transform our understanding of chimpanzees. She was their tireless advocate and a great champion of environmental protection." ''''

You know that you've lived a good life when you die at 91 and everybody thinks that you died way too young.
Not only a good life, but truthfully, a good death. Passing in your sleep while traveling to lecture about your greatest passion, still mentally and physically fit until the very end. One really couldn't ask for a better way to go.

What an absolute fantastic photo.

Realizing someone had a good long life is not something many people ever think of. To still be doing things you have done your whole life when you are 91 is incredible (although David Attenborough is still doing his thing at 99)!

Final Message from Dr. Jane Goodall

In March this year, Dr. Jane Goodall filmed an interview that she understood would only be released after her death. The interview was captured by remotely operated cameras; and the footage was securely held until she died.

In the place where I am now, I look back over my life. I look back at the world I’ve left behind. What message do I want to leave? I want to make sure that you all understand that each and every one of you has a role to play. You may not know it, you may not find it, but your life matters, and you are here for a reason. And I just hope that reason will become apparent as you live through your life. I want you to know that, whether or not you find that role that you’re supposed to play, your life does matter, and that every single day you live, you make a difference in the world. And you get to choose the difference that you make.
